That's the thing about comedians, any real one should be taken very seriously. They have access to taboos, they can talk about whatever they want. Comedians are some of the most influential members of the media in this day and age.

This is too true, comedians are IMO the last true form of freedom of speech, they have the ability to draw a mass crowd and be able to speak openly about subjects that are usually spoken in hushed tones and whispers in every day life, they can bring things to light that would normally go unspoken, at least in the media.
It doesn't matter the subject, if they are talented enough they can make it in a way that appeals to most people regardless of what subject it is, that's why subjects such as abortion, politics, and anything else that can be a hot topic SHOULD be used by comedians, it's always good to get a different perspective on something, especially if it comes across with an actual point behind it.
Comedians have the ability to open the minds of their crowds with ideas most people don't or wouldn't think of.
I don't watch tv, haven't in years, but I'm literally obsessed with comedy and stand up, in fact it was/is my dream to do standup. Call it pathetic or whatever you want, but most of my life philosophies I've gotten through standup, and I still find myself occasionally learning something thanks to a comedians point of view.
Stanhope, Carlin, Hicks, even Dave Chappelle, were all amazing at showing the irony in society, there's sooo many more, even up and coming ones that SHOULD be taken seriously, and for good reason. They all have their particular topic they like to cover, whether it be racism, politics, whatever it is, but IMO comedians like that, are the best ones. Most of the time it's pretty obvious which jokes aren't meant to be taken seriously anyway.

Keep a notebook on you. I worked in a comedy club and every tuesday night was open mic night. Alot of those guys were funnier than some of the "headliners" because it was raw. It wasnt a polished script theyd been doing god knows how many times, going through the motions.
It felt like you were right there with them, it would actually get your adrenaline going, like you were up there with the underdog. I can tell you dig that shit...do it.

Yeah, he's hilarious, but after you watch his specials once, you're done. Unlike Louis CK and Bill Burr where you can watch the show 5 times and not tire of it.

That, to me, tells me that the point he's getting across is sticking. Louis C.K. has the same motive but he's more subtle. Like it's funny regardless but if you feel like thinking, the message is there.

Well in all fairness he does offer many solutions to the problems he is referring to in his rants, and as far as the watching it once and being done, well Carlin has probably more specials than Louie and bill Burr combined and then some, so In the time that it took you to watch one if Louie's specials three times you could have watched 3 different George carlin masterpieces instead

Every comedian has a different style. Carlin's style in his later years was grumpy cynical angry disgruntled old man and he fucking nailed it perfectly. He made TONS of very pertinent and acute observations about the state of affairs. I can only imagine the shit he would be saying if he was still alive.
And since when are comedians about offering solutions? Comedians are about fucking laughing, or in many cases highlighting and bringing to light social/political issues that most people don't dare touch with a ten foot pole, which Carlin did. That takes fucking balls. And he did it with precision. And he did in fact offer solutions in many cases.
If you don't like him don't listen to him. If you want to talk shit about shitty comedians, talk about fucking Carlos Mencia or Dane Cook the fake unoriginal joke thieves or any of the other piece of shit hackjobs out there.

I already have a notebook I walk around with incase I think of a joke I've probably written around a few hundred jokes so far but the closest I've got to performing them was slipping them into a conversation if it fit the subject we were talking about, which is so awesome when you get a really good laugh even from that.
At some point I'm definitely going to start doing open mics, I just have to get over the fact that I'm most likely going to bomb a lot at first, I've got people to laugh using some of the stuff I've written, but it's a whole different ball game when it goes from a two way conversation to a one way conversation, I'll need to build up my segue's, the actual set up for the jokes and what kind of stage persona I'd go for, which would most likely just be my normal personality, people have always told me I'm a funny story teller, if I can find away to be myself and add in punchlines I could probably do it.
If I could get even a solid 10 minute set, I'd be happy, I love making people laugh. If I felt I had any talent after actually trying, I'd probably quit my job on the spot and start traveling the road doing sets, even if I don't become the next Carlin, stand up has been a huge factor in my life and I'd be satisfied getting to see the country and making people laugh along the way.
Soon enough I'm going to be attending comedy clubs a few times a week, so I can try to become really familiar with the way people open and the general atmosphere of the places so I can finally attempt to do it.

That's it man. Dont worry about that bombing thing, it's gonna happen. Add to that what went really well one night, the next night didnt go over so smoothly for these guys I saw. Theres a lot of "feeling the atmosphere" to it, it would seem.
My bets are if you spend a good bit of time in one room, and then go up it'll cancel out the jitters better than if its your first time being there. They tend to keep the room blacked out where I was so you could only really see the first few rows of tables.
Some places you can get a video of yourself so if you go for it post that shit.

Good comedy isn't about cheap laughs. It's about finding a way to laugh at the really bad stuff so you can continue to think about it without blowing your brains out. Meaningful comedy mixes the good with the bad and get's the two so clearly confused that you feel a need to sort it out for yourself. That's what Carlin was about. That 75% is stuff that you can think about in a new light after you've heard the 25% that nails it. If you don't have the patience to listen to a good setup or think about the joke afterwards, then you should stick with the guys who can tell fart jokes that make you laugh after hearing them for the third time. Don't hate on Carlin just because you have a lazy sense of humor. That's on you.

Carlin is good. He liked word play and verbal pacing a lot.
Someone who never clicks with me is Bill Hicks. Nearly all of his "jokes" miss on me, I don't get why folks go so nuts over his standups.
