Tub size question. Better for taller or wider?
    #21724540 - 05/26/15 11:46 AM (8 years, 8 months ago)

So, I realized that I can fit many more tubs in my GH if they are not as wide, but taller (deeper) plastic tubs. I've read all over that a deeper sub is better for yields. I'm looking at some 12 qt tubs that are about 8" deep and only 6"wide and 10" long. Would that be better than a 12" x 12" x 12" tub? I have a bunch of tubs, but they're all the size mentioned second in the post. They just take up way to much room and my subs are only about 3-4" deep.

I'd like to get tubs that are much deeper and nearly as wide.

Deeper sub's aren't always great producers. A 2in sub potentially could produce as much as a 3-4in sub.

Really its more about surface area

Like so many aspects of this hobby its a trade off. Typically a shallow sub in a mono tub puts out a better BE than a deep one. Two 2" subs will outproduce a 4" every time. But a single 4" will usually outproduce a single 2" (but with lower BE) especially over more than one flush. So it comes down to what space is needed more, fruiting space or colonizing space. Or how much spawn are you willing to make for an expected BE/yield?

If I had a big fruiting area and wanted to make more of my spawn first flush then I would run more shallower subs. If fruiting space was an issue and I was pumpinh out spawn like a madman then go for the deeper. Of course there are other factors in play this is only a small comparison. It all comes down to personal preference. I like to run shallow 2" subs in my mini monos and 3" subs in my standard ones.

Not always. A sub will produce what it can given genetics and available resources. There are a lot more factors involved than just fruiting area.

I've tried 4",3" and 2" subs and stuck with 2" ever since. You can get 2 very nice flushes and a decent 3rd off a 2" sub
