Misc flower ID and question..
    #21721116 - 05/25/15 02:17 PM (8 years, 8 months ago)

So I was given a bag of dried flowers labeled 'seeds from [name] garden"..
In it was a picture of the plant.  Here it is.

Of course it's sideways.  Anyways can anyone ID this plant?

Also, all Im seeing in the bag is dried flowers, no seeds like I would think Id find.  I must be overlooking the part youre supposed to plant I guess.  I can post a picture of what's in the bag if that would help.  Id ask the guy who's garden these came out of but he's since passed on.  I'd like to get some going to pass around to a few family members if possible.

Does this look familiar to you?

Maybe some kind of sun flower or daisy? That's the best I can do...

Hey that's a pretty good guess, I just did an image search.  They have that cone comming up through the center like in the pictures.

Is that what Im supposed to plant?  A "fiber/hair" off a piece of that cone?  If so should I just lay it on the soil or cover it a little?

Here's what one of the cones looks like, and some of the bag how I got it.

I'm guessing the seeds must be in that cone.

I couldn't really give you a sure answer based off these pictures.
Being unsure about the ID of flower, I can't ID the seeds.

Try squeezing and rolling the buds between your thumb & index finger, see if seeds fall out.
Also look through bag for what might be seeds.

Otherwise, wait in hope for someone with better judgement to come along.

Are those Dahlias? Kind of resemble dahlias but I think they are spread by rhizome instead of seed, usually...?

'I don't know', Alice answered.
'Then', said the cat, 'it doesn't matter.'

That's about as good as I can get since Im taking a picture of a picture.  I cant get in there and get the details like if I was shooting the actual flower.  The dried flowers are kind of broken up but I can try and 'piece' one together so at least you can see pedal width, cone size etc. if that would help.  I should be able to get some detail doing that..

That might be your best bet to get an ID from someone, this is "out of my league" at this point.

Do you know if this was something he collected from the wild? Your general location might help too.

He was growing them in WV.  Im not sure the origin, Id be willing to bet it was either something he picked up from a seed shop, or was gifted to him(which could mean anything).  It's all speculation really.

I'll try and piece one together.  Or at least put some of the pieces to scale with something.

If it has "sunflower" like seeds..  my guess is that it might be a
(Tithonia) - "mexican sunflower" some are yellow.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tithonia

Lacking seed photos and closer inspections of leaves and sepals. . and top views of flowers and stalks.. I can't quite give a definitive answer. It might also be some kind of (daisy), but most Daisy plants do not form as big a Bush as that. . that's why my guess is a Tithonia

Not really, kind of brown.  There's a couple that have a purpleish color on the tips.  In the fourth post down theres a center of a flower in the picture.

Dude!  I didn't even notice the end of the petals, they have this spear point thing going on, are these what you're talking about?

They're as flat as the petal, but they do look like they're sectioned off.  If these are the seeds the bag is loaded with them and I didnt even notice them

Right on, KBG nailed it.

Yeah those are what he means.

I searched for zinnia seeds, they seem to match up.

Word, that's whats up.  I'll have to snoop around and see how I'm supposed to plant these.  There's not a whole lot to them, they're pretty fragile.  Maybe lay them on the soil and give them a bit of a top coat.

Any pointers kactus?

Just some quick info I found...

"""""
Zinnias are recommended for beginning gardeners.
Zinnias are undemanding annuals that simply need full sun, warmth, and well-drained soil rich in organic matter. If soil is poor, incorporate lots of compost or leaf mold. Zinnias can be direct sown or transplanted into the garden. Space taller varieties about 12 to 18 inches apart. Space shorter growing varieties about 6 to 8 inches apart.

http://www.burpee.com/flowers/zinnias/all-about-zinnias-article10019.html

"""""""""""
Planting
Zinnias are grown from seed; they grow very quickly in the right conditions. Zinnias do not like to be transplanted.
Full sun is essential wiht a minimum daylight temperature of 60 degrees F.
Zinnias are adaptable but prefer fertile, humus-rich, well drained soil at pH preference 5.5 - 7.5.
If soil is amended with compost, the flowers will grow more quickly.
Sow seeds 1/4-inch deep.
Space plants 4 to 24 inches apart depending on variety.  (Many common varieties are 6 inches within the row and 2 feet in between rows.) See back of seed package.
Germination occurs at 74 to 80 degrees F in 5 to 76 days.
Sow in succession for a longer flowering display.

5-76 days
Cool, I should be able to handle this.  I'm gonna throw some in a few solo cups and update when I see green to get a day count on how long it took for them to pop up.  This should be good..
