Is this a contam? (PF Tek)

I've got a bunch of beautiful PF Tek jars currently colonizing, and one of the jars is showing something that I'm not sure of. It's a small, reddish-brown spot. I can't really determine if it is a contam or not. Any ideas?

I had this. Turned out to be rust from the little metal shards that I neglected to completely clean out after drilling... Looked identical to that.

Hmm. I definitely washed the lids after drilling. I guess it is possible I didn't do a very good job. Think it'll affect fruiting?

That looks like a metal fragment oxidizing from when you made the holes in your lids.

That totally looks like a metal fragment... good eye there. I can't tell you if it will affect your grow...I'm leaning towards no, but like I said I can't tell you for sure.

Very good to know. Is there any solid way of knowing when a jar is 100% consolidated? I have this fear of cracking open a jar to slide the cake out, and everything just falling apart. So much so that I had a dream about it last night

7 days after all visual surfaces are covered. This allows mycelium to penetrate to the centre. The cake won't crumble, even duds stay in one piece when you pop them out.

Ah nice. That means I can birth 2 of my jars today. 8 more to go. Any point in waiting to birth when all jars are consolidated?

consolidation is eating of nutrition, it has nothing to do with keeping the cakes from crumbling or colonizing the center!
7-10 days after full colonization is enough, no need to wait for pins or anything in vitro.

I think the colonizing the center thing is just advice for impatient noobs. If jars aren't made properly they can be a little wet, and the center can take a bit longer. I know that's not consolidation but it's still good advice for noobs that think their jars are ready to go.

Birthed that jar about an hour ago and that brown spot wasn't actually on the cake; just the jar. I'm thinking it's rust as well.
Got that cake plus another dunked. Will roll tomorrow and stick it in the FC and hope for the best!

Good luck dry your yield fast as possible, preferably with a dehydrator. Happy trippin man

I have one of those Presto food dehydrators, but it doesn't allow for temp control. Think it'll be ok?

Good to know. I was worried that it might get too hot, but I guess the point of dehydration is that it is slow, low heat.

Question about FAE exchange. My original plan was to have my roommate fan the cakes while I was at work, but he recently broke his leg and can't get around too reliably. Would putting a box fan on low in front of the fruit chamber be sufficient for FAE while I'm at work for 9 hours a day? I'm just not sure if this is a bad idea or not. I made just a normal FC with a grid of holes on all sides and perlite in the bottom.

No, that would just drop your RH and dry your cakes out. I've used a SGFC successfully working 8hr shifts. I would just mist and fan when you can. Mist if needed before you leave for work.
