Anybody tried lye for pasteurization?
    #21720226 - 05/25/15 09:55 AM (8 years, 8 months ago)

Aloha claims that wood ash is superior to other methods of pasteurization. As far as I know, lye is the ingredient in wood ash that raises the substrates pH. So, why don't we use lye for pasteurization? I don't even see any mention of it on the boards for this purpose. Surely somebody has tried it. Maybe it's just too hazardous to work with, or maybe it's not cost effective? What's up?

Specially not if we compare it to lime

Are you sure that lime is cheaper though? Lye does appear to be more expensive, but I suspect that it takes a lot less lye to raise the pH of the substrate. And, if lye is comparable to wood ash, you may end up with greater biological efficiency than you get with lime.

Have you ever actually used lye? I'm sure that somebody has. I'm also sure that there's a reason why it isn't used, but I'd like to know what it is.

Sodium ions aren't great for mycelium in high concentrations but it's probably a cost thing.  Lye is $10-20/# and lime is about $.2/#

Yeah, I was just reading something on another site about excess salts being no bueno. But, I would think that wood ash would have the same problem, and Aloha says that wood ash produces better BE than other pasteurization methods. Maybe wood ash is more chemically different than I realize.

There wood ash pasteurization recipe includes hydrated lime.
