I have just begun my cacti collection and picked up this pretty on evilbay; it was listed as a Trichocereus HYBRID that the seller couldn't id because they lost the tag; so how can I find out what it is? Is it an impossible task?

The taxonomy of these plants is very foggy to begin with, so it will be close to impossible to ID with any certainty without knowledge of it's origin. Also, it's just a seedling, so it won't show it's true characteristics until it matures. My best guess would be a bridgesii variety. But, the amount of spines and structure leads me to believe that it may be of peruvianus lineage. It also may be a pachanoi hybrid as well. Difficult to discern. Nice plant regardless.

And this is why people who cannot be bothered to label their plants, or have no idea how to grow in the first place, ruin the hobby for people who take the time to do things properly.
Hybrid seed is all good when it's labeled properly. If it's not it just wastes everybodies time and adds unknown genetics into the already confusing mix that is Trichocereus taxonomy. Which fucks things up in the long run and does no services to the hobby. It's just pollution plain and simple.
That rant wasn't aimed at you either OP. It's just an observation from a deranged cactus grower who takes pride in being a real plantsman.
If people cannot be bothered to keep good records then don't bother getting into this hobby. You'll just add to the mess and make things worse.

If I may add a little something, it gets even worse. Chances are a lot of confused novice growers will buy what they're told in here and on other online forums and pass on the plants or their progeny as a given name / clone / hybrid / whatever. I understand the will to help and the need to have a name for a plant, but we're doing a BIG disservice to the hobby by saying anything other "it's a hybrid / it's a sp." Somewhen in the future someone will sell, trade or give away a plant saying "yeah, it's a bridgesii x pachanoi hybrid" just because someone in here said it LOOKS like a bridgesii x pachanoi hybrid.
To get back on topic, OP, it IS an impossible task. It's a hybrid, that's all. A lovely plant BTW, rejoice.
