Oysters not Pinning
    #21718846 - 05/24/15 08:57 PM (8 years, 8 months ago)

Hello Shroomery!

I've grown oysters a hand full of times, however this time my oysters (Ostreatus) are acting a little funny.

i have never had an issue fruiting before but this time they are just refusing to pin. they are in my basement fruiting chamber with adequate humidity right around 70F. they have plenty of fresh air and light. as you can see below, they are growing fluffy mycelium  out of the holes and making some clumps on top (i'm growing them in buckets this time around). i've never seen this and searching isn't bringing me any definitive answers.

that being said i do have eryngii spawn on the shelf. are these characteristic of eryngii? i guess it's possible that i mixed up spawn:confused:

any ideas?!?

Thank you!

I have a similar growth on my milk crate, it got fist sized i removed it today, i believe it may be due to high humidity? The visible water droplets on your substrate and the fuzzy growth out the hole tells me your humidity is oversaturated. Try reducing the humidity a tad. Do you have a hygrometer? You can score a half decent analog cigar humidor hygrometer for ~$10.

high humidity and low FAE cause the mycelium to grow looking for air instead of fruiting. needs more fresh air and maybe a cold shock

thank you both for the replies. i went ahead and picked off the protruding mycelium and left the "door" propped open to decrease humidity and hopefully  encourage some more FAE. i'll report back with any changes.

thanks again!
