Grain prep question
    #21718724 - 05/24/15 08:17 PM (8 years, 8 months ago)

So I've been using rye grain for about a year now since I upgraded from birdseed. I had been following guides saying to boil for 10 mins after soak. My first few attempts at multispore failed and I could see that my grain was way too dry and the growth would just completely stall after a few days.

I decided to boil for longer, some more success, but still dryer than I would like.

Now I really boil the grain for a full hour after a 24 hr soak. It seems really long but I have gotten to the point where I know it works well.

I'm not really questioning what has been working for me, but I just got to know, Does anyone else boil for that long? I feel like I must have some really pain-in-the-ass grain to require that long. It's just a 50 lb bag of rye berries I get in bulk at the health food place here.

Have you ever tried whole oats?  I went to them a while back, they are super fast compared to rye and seem to hold more water IMO ( just testing )I will post a pick of some rye next to oats inoculated the same day for you in the next day or two and let you be the judge

Interesting. I have not tried oats, no. Do they have any problems with clumping when colonized? What's the cost of them compared to Rye?

No clumping at all, 10 bucks for a 40 lb bag

Well ok then, I just did a search and found a lot of info that leads me to believe that grain may actually be inferior... Thats pretty neat. So do you just rinse and boil it? No soak? That would be a huge improvement.

I do a 20 to 24 hour soak starting with hot water and coffee

Boil for 10 min drain then into jars to the pc

Just like rye

I have a pic of PE-UC inoculated 2 days ago with a lc but cant seem to upload it for some reason, the oats are running away from the rye. Oats have dime size growth and rye just has little spots
