You want to eat verm and brf? Sclerotia can take in some of the substrate and it's not uncommon to eat pieces of substrate. Imo popcorn sounds appetizing lol. I'd definitely do it on oats cause that shits also appetizing
Haha touche buck :P

Give em 2 more months before you try em out. You should try fruiting some as well, stones are fun but the fruits will blow your mind everytime.

i have 2 trays that started the spawn run 4 days ago

popcorn is also a really great spawn for its consistency, color, smell, taste, and how much water can hold.
So, if I was growing stones, I would want a shit ton of water and a spawn material that taste great to eat. Did I mention that popcorn smell GREAT when boiling and pressure cooking. Cant say that for other grains

shit ton of water doesnt SEEM to produce as well.
and it follows as stones are probably a defense mech. against drought and fire etc.
i added 5cc's of sterile water to one once after 1/3 colonization and then shook it, as well as all the others... and it didnt colonize well. a real study should be done at some point i didnt isolate a strain, the sample size is small, etc etc...
rye works well, i think oat would be nice but its not as big as rye or popcorn. large grains are useful.
will eventually do a side by side on rye and popcorn, i imagine someone has before.

While IMO popcorn blows as a spawn choice its probably pretty decent for sclerotia. Large empty spaces between grains is normally wasted space but for sclerotia they probably provide an ideal point for stone formation. It probably is nice to have a larger easier to clean grain for stones as well. If it wasn't so damn expensive i would give it a try for stones myself.

Popcorn was used as the spawn medium
- MS ALT#7 spores to agar
- Agar culture to each jar
- Jars inoculated on 4/30
Tray # 1
- 5 qts of spawn without soak
- 1 qt of spawn with soak and added the soak water into the tray
- 2 qts of coir and verm mixed in the spawn medium
- 2 qts of coir and verm added as a top layer
Total spawn jars used: 6 qts Total substrate used: 4 qts Spawn Run date: 5/20
Tray # 2
- 4 qts of spawn with a 40 min soak (water dumped before adding to tray)
- 3 qts of coir and verm mixed in
- 1 qt of spawn that had the soak water shaken in the jar to act as a GLC (hoping for fasting colonization time)
- tray was mix again
- 2 qts of coir and verm as a top layer
Total spawn jars used: 5 qts Total substrate used: 5 qts Spawn Run date: 5/20
Tray 1: 5/24

Tray 2: 5/24

Spawn Run Notes
- Temperatures have been 65F - 70F
- Cracking in subs occur doing moving the green houses together
- foil has been removed to give more FAE & RH
- Trays are 20 inches long, 10 inches wide, and two inches deep
- The end goal is to get prints ASAP then replace with psilocybe tampanensis followed by psilocybe mexicana for the same reasons

Cool. Can you tell me more? I have had thoughts of injecting a few jars with water when they are 5% colonized to act as a instant LC.

I know! I have done over 120 qt jars of ALT#7 in rye jars many years ago.

well thats what the plan was, i started with 1 cc and tried to get it back out...
then tried that and failed 4 more times
gave up. i can make it work but it didnt.
so there were 3 jars in that series... and i shook all three.
and 2 of them look great, and the one looks...facht i dunno. its fully colonized but it looks half colonized?
im going to grain to agar jar and look at it soon. i flamed the syringe etc.
i dunno, i figured i'd go back and do a full test at some point.

Sweet rxb! I want to run some trials too. I think getting the grains to the correct moisture content is the key. Just speculation though. I have also thought about adding some type of material to the jar to help soak up the water but I dont want the material to turn into some type of cake - that would just be bad.
