Help! My cat's PC is leaking! What now?
    #2171521 - 12/11/03 09:23 PM (13 years, 8 months ago)

So my cat was preparing to sterelize her first eight jars ever, and after 10 minutes of heating, steam began to exhaust from the petcock as normal, and upon closing it..ppssssssssssssss. Steam begins to exhaust from the seal in the center of the lid, therefore ruining any chances of correct pressurization, and ruining her first attempt. So the question is; are these jars still ok for another attempt in another cooker, and will they be fine if left as is for a few days. I hope that all of her effort isn't wasted so far, so any feedback will be appreciated.

Thanks

Meow

How long were they steamed?

If you must save them, then definately send them to the fridge. Remember that these jars are excellent medium for bacteria as well as fungi. Even though PCing them should kill all the bacteria, you will lose some nutrition to the bacteria, and increase the risk of contamination even after the PC. They should be ok for a few days if they are PF jars (BRF). Seed/Grain might be a problem, I don't know. You could also steam sterilize them in the PC if they are PF jars, but waiting until you fix it would be just as good. I think some silicon sealent would work to fix the leak in the center of the lid.

I would redo them -- why waste spores? They could be o.k. -- depends on how long they were p.c.'ed. If it was only like 15 mins. they should still be o.k.

Sounds like you might need a new gasket for that p.c. Turning it around sometimes fixes it, though.

If that is an All American cooker; it sounds like you need a new over pressure plug, part #2040.

Oh, yeah -- I thought he meant leaking from the sides. If the overpressure plug just popped out a bit you can sometimes just put masking tape on it after taking it out and pushing it back up through the bottom, and the pressure will push it up and keep it in place. This might be dangerous, though -- be sure to watch the pressure gague, if you have one.
