Using a Sulfur Burner to sterilize room prior to Mushroom grow/ fruiting? Discussion?
    #21714256 - 05/23/15 01:41 PM (8 years, 8 months ago)

Ok I researched a bit about this and seem to have found nothing so I will bring up the topic here.

I had a very good friend who was growing some good indoor weed.
Most, if not all, their problems dealing with molds, insects, powdery mildew, aphids, spider mites etc, were solved by using a sulfur burner during various stages of the grow.

Now with Mushroom growing...

Now my thoughts is in addition to normal hygiene techniques while growing mushrooms, would adding a sulfur burner to the list of tools and techniques be an asset?

Here are my thoughts.

Using the sulfur burner to pre-sterilize  the room prior to the addition of any mycellium / mushroom stages of growth?

So for example I might do this in the room which I have my laminar flow hood to knock out mold floating around.
or in fruiting room,  prior to opening of fruiting containers.

Obviously it will knock out insects which themselves could carry contaminants.

Would using the sulfur burner during a mushroom grow kill the mushrooms?

I am just trying to figure a good technique to eradicate as much of the contaminants prior to inoculation of the grain, or the grain to grain transfer, or the prep stage when the completed jars and emptied into the containers and the addition of the substrate is mixed.

I have just found that no matter how good I clean, or use alcohol, etc, I nevertheless get some loss due to contamination by trich.

Just wondering if anyone has ever tried using a sulfur burner to compliment sterilization or bug control?

here is a basic image of a sulfur burner for those that have never heard of this technique before

I'm sorry but what?!?!?!

Use a still air box.. takes 5 minutes to make and you just need soap water around the walls and let it sit for 20 minutes and you'll have a space to work in with no contams.

I've never once blamed my space for contamination. I blame my techniques. Using agar to make a clean inoculation (not needing syringes which are a crapshoot) and a still air box will give me clean spawn. I have a filter on the jar lid so the shit in the room can't get into my jars. Filter discs, micropore tape and polyfil are all great for filter holes.

After a clean full colonization you now should have a substrate strong enough to fight contaminations during fruiting.

Watch how easy it is to make a still air box but I'd recommend a 100+ qt clear tub.

Best dimensions for a tote I've found for my SAB, and I've done a ton of searching. I believe it's the same tote that TL uses in his g2g xfer video.

thanks for the advise

Lets pretend that I am talking from the perspective of a major grow.
For example, processing 200 grain jars per month.

For example I found a good article here on line dealing with commercial mushroom growing and it talks about using sulfur burning.
I was just thinking that someone here had experience using it as part of their techniques.

I've never used one, or heard of anyone here using one.

I don't see what harm it would cause, but seems overkill. I've yet to deal with fungus gnats, or anything similar.

Props for using archive.org, but that paper was issued in 1938.

To help put it into a better perspective, - I've got a mushroom book written in 1945 which states that "the mushroom farmer should periodically treat his agarigus beds with DDT"...:facepalm3:

I really don't think anyone nowadays should question whether any of these ideas are valid anymore.
