Aerial Mycelium Problem?
    #21713492 - 05/23/15 10:57 AM (5 years, 9 months ago)

Hello world of fellow shroomheads, I am here for another inquiry into the experiences we've all had and I seek some answers. Lately I have been having some trouble getting my cakes to produce any fruits. It's like they grow nicely in the jars while they are incubating. The mycelium looks nice and healthy and it even develops a few pins in vitro. Then I go and birth them after giving ample enough time for consolidation. Place them in a roughly 24 hours cold water soak then into the chamber they go after being rolled in vermiculite. Then here is where it gets troublesome, none of the cakes I have put in the fruiting chamber in the past 3 months have produced any fruits while the mycelium is obviously healthy. Most recently I took every precaution I could think of when it comes to preventing infections of any kind and all seemed well (and honestly all may still be well) but this is where my question comes in. After all that, the mushrooms that were in vitro are growing pretty nicely on two of the cakes but no new pin formation and on two other cakes they have what looks like aerial mycelium growing on them and I cant figure out why since I fan them several times daily. These cakes are mazatapec, placed in the chamber 4 days ago. I only took pictures of the ones in question but as it turns out the other two cakes that had pins growing in vitro are also developing this appearance. Without any further details please take a look at these images and tell me all you can find wrong or right with them. I need to improve if necessary. The way I see it, there's always room for improvement.

The one on the bottom was not rolled in vermiculite because I was trying to see if there was a substantial difference in the output of those with verm and those without.

Do you have holes in all six sides spaced 2 inches apart?

Yes sir, I do. I have screwed up many chambers in my day and eventually decided to go with the simple SGFC. Its built to the specs.

I think you're gucci man. It's just checking out the moisture in the air. Fan the tub every couple hours and don't mist for now

So what you're saying is, the mycelium is reaching through the verm barrier and off the one without verm because theres too much moisture in the air inside the chamber? I was thinking the only way aerial mycelium can form is if theres too much co2 in the bottom of the chamber thus making the mycelium grow upward into the air trying to escape that.  Honestly I do mist it frequently. I will dial it down a notch or two to be safe.

I may be wrong, but I don't believe aerial mycelium is a problem at all.  I also could swear that the exact cause is unknown.  I am just going off the top of my head though and don't remember when I read about it or who posted and could have it all backwards.

The holes in the first pic seem a bit small, but I'm also on my phone so it's hard to tell. did you make them 1/4? I doubt it will make or break the grow, but could cause some fuzzy feet.

Just curious, did you consolidate? And how long did they take to colonize?

I consolidated for one week as recommended and it took roughly a month for them to fully colonize.

Yea, I built the SGFC to specifications. I have built a few more in the past and screwed those up so I did it properly this last time. I have been doing this for almost 2 years now so I have some experience just still like the input of others who have experienced the same things.

it's just difficult to get a good look on the phone. it could possibly just be burrs left from when you made the holes that make them look so small. You should be good to go

I just noticed that some of the pins that have formed under the aerial mycelium have become aborts and as for right now there has been no new pin development and this concerns me.

Patience you must have, my young padawan. If you had said it turned a certain color or had a new bad smell, you would be right to be concerned.  Sometimes it just takes time.  Eat the aborts or save for later and start another project to occupy your mind.
