More from my redwood forest
    #2171329 - 12/11/03 06:27 PM (13 years, 10 months ago)

I went for a walk in the woods behind my house today and snapped a few pics.

this clump of yellow mushrooms was growing on top of a fallen redwood tree.

I thought these with the orange stems were cool.

Here is a very large mushroom, the only one I found.

purple.

and now for some little amanitas, I never saw any of these in the redwoods before, they surprised me.

Very similar finds that I have!

You got some nice specimens there... Boletus edulis dont usually grow in redwoods, but, that middle picture of the large solo mushroom really looks like one.

Did you note if that mushroom had gills or pores?

Well, Boletus edulis is probably one of my top 3 favorite mushrooms. They taste just amazing, and are really beefy...Almost like if you were eating a steak!

But, I wouldn't ever expect it to be growing from redwood debris. It will only grow from pine, and other conifers. The general macroscopic characteristics of that mushroom just resembled a B. edulis. I just thought I'd ask.

I went back into the woods today and noticed that it had pores and not gills, there may be some pine in the woods there, its not all redwoods where I live.

What color were the pores? I would have need to seen more pictures of the mushroom to make a better ID.

You live in an area where you can find Boletes...I know that for sure. If you like cooking, or like eating gourmet mushrooms, I would keep your eye out for some edulis.

Check out google.com's images...type in Boletus edulis, it should give you a bunch of pictures. Of course post your findings here before consuming!

I think the yellow shrooms are a variety of naematoloma.

i think you may be right about those MJ. i saw thousands of naematolomas when i went up to humboldt county on my last camping trip. they where everywhere, and prety much like those except for a more distinct orange coloration to them that varried to some degree in intensity. they where the most common mushrooms i found, but i didn't bother trying to key them out since i was rather sure of the genus and since they aren't of much value other than academic curiosity and asthetic apreciation to me.
