grain too dry? first grow
    #21712771 - 05/23/15 01:06 AM (8 years, 8 months ago)

I let the grains soak for about 18 hours then brought to a full boil for 10 minutes and drained the grain for about an hour. before loading my grain into the jars to be PC'd i put a think layer of dry verm at the bottom of my jars to prevent excess moisture from accumulating there. The jars are currently sitting in a TiT at 81F.
it has been 3 days since inoculation

Take jars out of tit and leave them at room temp. It's only been 3 days. Spores can take up to 14-17 days to germinate. You want your grains to look sort of dry on the outside. Besides, it seems as though your prep work is fine. Just be patient and don't give up on the jars unless it's been over 3 weeks without signs of growth.

You are better off heating the whole room than you are heating just the jars. It is more ideal to keep temps between 70-78*F during all stages of growth. But 68*F isn't bad, It will just slow growth a little
Which is better than leaving them in temps where contams are more likely to thrive.

i let the grain soak for 18 hours with gypsum, then boiled for 10 minutes, then put in PC @ 15psi for 90 mins and i let them cool overnight in the PC before inoculation the jars are kerr 16 oz jars and i put a thin layer of dry verm at the bottom to prevent excess moisture buildup at the bottom of the jar, then i put the in a TiT for 3 days so far at 80-81F with a garbage bag over them

i think it was the dry verm layer at the bottom that dried them out, although the TiT could have something to do with it i suppose; btw room is pretty dry

you'll be fine.

put them in the box they came in and put that on top of your refrigerator.

if there is no growth in 10 days, you may begin to worry.

good luck

Based off of the way you described your preparation, there is enough moisture for myc to form. It's only been a days, give it some more time.

The way I prep oats is to boil for about 30-40 minutes, until the inside is fully cooked and no longer starchy/white. The inside, when cooked, becomes almost clear and gelatinous.

The beauty of oats is they're pretty resistant to over cooking and bursting, unlike rye and wbs. I prefer oats over other grains because they don't even really have to be rinsed and certainly don't have to be soaked. I'm an oat man.

Also, skip the verm next time. It's not needed if you prep your grain correctly. Don't use it as a crutch.

i since started up two new jars just in case the previous ones were too dry, but same result, ( pic above is of new jar) same prep rinse until water pours off clean, 18 hour soak with gypsum, boil 10 mins drain, shake and then put into jars with two layers of tyvek sheets and foil over that. I put hte jars in the PC @ 15 psi for 90 minutes and inoculated when cool about 10 hours later.
I also followed eagle's advice and didnt add the vermiculite to the jar.
Also this pic was taken right after taking them out of the PC and inoculating them.

I have super hard water that makes it difficult to hydrate my grains...  I usually soak in store bought water, that seems to help.

yea that's whats bugging me though after i boil the grains for 10 mintues they look like the fountain of youth being all plump and hydrated, then after i pressure cook the grains in the jars they come out looking like Hugh Hefner's ballsack.
