Spontaneous root formation half way up a Pachanoi..?
    #2171265 - 12/11/03 02:42 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

Hello all,

I have a Pachanoi, about two feet tall, and roots have started to develop just under half way up. Does anyone know if this is "normal" (ie, nothing to worry about), or perhaps a sign that something is wrong? It's been living for the past couple of months beneath my (west facing) window, it's quite cool, it gets quite a lot of light but little direct sun, and I've been keeping it dry until it gets warmer.
I could post a picture if you want, but there's not a lot to see. Just roots forming about half way up. They seem to be forming in random positions, not out of aereoles or anything.

Anyone know why this is happening? Thanks...

It's not planted upside down is it?

Nothing to worry about. The plant is just looking for more water. You can cut off the "air roots" if they bother you.

word is that in nature the cactus grows really tall, then falls over and roots it's whole side and then new cactis grow up the top side of it.

that is true.. but it roots after it hits the ground, if it falls over with roots already on it they'll just get cracked off..

The in nature thing is the basis for rooting a cutting on it's side.

OK, thanks all. I had hoped for a brief, fleeting moment that they might be flower buds forming, but they definitely are roots. Also, am I right in thinking that buds grow out of aereoles?
