Alternative agar recipes
    #21712445 - 05/22/15 10:54 PM (8 years, 8 months ago)

I heard that you can use brf and water to make an agar plate. I am wondering if white flower would work, or oatmeal, and if using coffee water could help with the nutes, or if there are other easy poorman recipes.

I gotta get me some ME, I have precooked Trader Joe's grains: Barley, Bulgur, and farro. Could I flour these and use them for agar? Which would work best? These are precooked, does that mean I don't need a pressure cooker to sterilize them in a jar?

I don't have much,  I was planning on making up a grain flour agar in a half pint and steaming it, then inoculation with a spore print of... Oak ridge, and maybe trying to make a cake with the barley... My popcorn jar smells like almonds, Is this a contam? It looks like white fluffy mycelium...

I think he is talking about making a thin brf cake, agar thick, in the bottom of jar as a 'no pour no agar agar plate'

I'd say brf agar is as easy as it comes to no agar agar plates.  Plenty of nutes and a proven medium for mycelium growth.

It'll work as a growth medium but I wouldn't compare it to agar. It's just a think brf cake.

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/7496806 grain gel, are there any good teks for this? I want to use the bulgur wheat cause it's already ground up, but it doesn't seem to have the hull husks, is this going to be a problem?

I know some very good cultivators who prefer dog food agar.

I like PDA right now with potatoe flakes.

Agar is maybe 1-1.50 per litre home made with the prices in my neighborhood. Its not expensive at all

I'll start here. I'm completely broke without a penny in my name... I'm just bored, I ground up the bulgur into a flower, added a small amount to a half pint, added water, it's steaming right now, we will see... How long should I steam it?

Check this one out. You can find these items in a typical grocery store.

Agar agar is cheap at Asian market. The reason I like agar is the visibility of the mycelium growth and possible contamination problem. pasty agar tek is a great place to start and get a good idea to expirement. With all those grains it may be difficult to steam sterilize some of the contams without a pressure cooker. Brown Rice is a low contam forgiving grain for brf cakes!

It's precooked probably in large pressure cookers and then dried in the oven, ground up into powder, steamed for one hour... inoculated with... oak ridge...  We will see if it contams before mycelium growth pics etc....

What if: I boiled some wheat flour, then filtered and boiled the water off to obtain a syrup. Could this syrup/gel support fugi growth, with nothing else added? (I do not have agar agar or agar)

I tried this tek as well.
Both with ground up brown rice, and rye grass seed.
Even though I pc'd them for sterilization, they all went rancid fairly quickly.
Maybe (probably) I didn't pc long enough, but your hope at sterilizing as you are is very small.
Good luck though.

Check out some teks using water obtained from soaking grains.

This thread has good info.
It's not exactly what you're talking about, but in the same direction.
Hope it helps.
