Yeah, the US has so much fucking oil, we just don't use it.

Here is a comparison of the oil reserves inside the United States (not including off-shore drilling) versus reserves in other countries:
8 times as much as Saudi Arabia
18 times as much as Iraq
22 times as much as Iran
500 times as much as Yemen

However even if fossil fuels are being used, coal etc. or natural gas they seem to be more efficient in the context of a power plant, hence the cost of electricity vs buying gasoline.
none of these address how we store this energy for use in transportation
Actually, it's pretty easy to capture electrical energy for later use. You just have to convert it to some other form. Excess electricity can be used to generate hydrogen for later use. You can pump water up a hill, converting the electrical energy into potential energy.

Wouldn't that be kinetic, not potential?

The kinetic energy becomes potential once its reached its location.

Sort of, if you had the water not moving, and sitting atop the hill waiting to be released down the hill, that's potential.
As long as the water is moving it's kinetic isn't it?

Lol. This is like the exact opposite of reality.

Sure, I suppose the system would be incorporating both types until it is finished storing energy.
Though I imagine a battery system would be preferable than physical energy transfers - since they are more efficient, energy is lost in all of those conversions.

how again do we store this energy in vehicles such as ships
They have nuclear powered ships already. Small to medium sized vessels could go electric, ones too large for that but to small to go nuclear would have to stay gas driven, but thats expected. Completely eliminating the use of fossil fuels is impossible, but that doesnt mean we cant seriously curb our appetite for them.
how do we store that electricity in those small to medium sized ship, we cant just charge up an electricity tank like we can a fuel tank
Banks of triple A batteries, bro.
