Giant poppie pod
    #21711761 - 05/22/15 07:10 PM (8 years, 8 months ago)

I'm gonna get so F***ed up :tee:

Just kidding, but seriously here are some "Izmir" poppies that just started flowering for me

So far I have just had my Persian whites flower and was sad at the blandness of the color so when I saw pink I got super excited! They look nice too.

Next year I will have to start as many different kinds as I can get my hands on :crazy2: I didn't realize how many kinds there were

Right on man..
the first picture is awfully tiny.. but hey if you're like me then it doesn't really matter what size they are because I just love growing them. check this out bro, I went over to my moms house and stayed for a few weeks to visit and I noticed in about three different pots/planters that she hadnt used in the last two years there were seedlings from my last poppy grow two years ago..so i was stoked to say the least lol.. I'd say these were maybe a month old, anyways so I took out all of the other little green plants out of those pots and planters and am putting them in the direct sunlight. I also Dug about A for inch deep trench becide my mother's storage building which gets mad Sunlight,I'm talking like a good 14 hours of Sun,anyways I added rocks from a nearby creek and some mulch for a top layer, I'm hoping they will grow but they might not because it is already almost June.but that's cool with me man because that just means they will either grow this autumn or next spring. I'm assuming that these little seedlings that are in the pots are no more than a month old. So since those seedlings are growing then I'm hoping that the 10 foot-4inch deep trench or miniature garden if you will, will start germinating and growing!! anyways man I just love growing God's medicine and I figured I would share my story with you..

PS-The Poppys that are in the pots are a variety. The other seedlings and the seeds in the miniature garden/trench are McCormick Poppy Seeds...FYI did you know that McCormick poppy seeds contain more opium alkaloids than all store poppy seeds..crazy huh..I was told that McCormick Poppy Seeds contain 10-12% Morphine and more opium alkaloids like papaverine, thebaine, and Codeine..
it actually makes sense to me now that I think about it because the brand name mcCormick are going to want the best high quality seeds they can get..ya know.
Well OP I'm sorry I wrote a novel on your 3 thread but I just wanted to share my story and I assume you like reading about other people's experiments as well, so...
well man I hope everything turns out great with your poppies...
do you have any tricks or pointers you could throw my way by chance? I would appreciate it. I know poppies are the easiest thing to grow, basically all you have to do is scatter them in some gravel and let them grow but if you really want a good yield then that's where the expertise comes in, so if you're willing to share some of your secrets I would appreciate it.
Thanks and have a great Memorial Day weekend!!
Peace

Yeah I am just growing them for the love of plants, this is actually my first try at poppies too so I think they turned out pretty good for the most part.

Those teeny ones are literally just plants I couldn't see through the other pap bushes until they withered up a bunch and now all these mini pods are forming :tongue2:

I will have to take pictures of some of the other ones, they are pretty cute/ laughable. I have at least 1 decently chunky pod so far though :crazy2:

That's awesome remnants from your old poppy grow were going strong still! I wish they would do that hear but maybe I just have not found the right kind for it.

I have some teensy seedlings myself that are the only outdoor ones that popped up and many haven't grown much in weeks but I noticed a few are getting bigger. I was considering trying to plant more too but figured it was already too late. Of course now is has been cooler and moister out
:facepalm3:

:shakefist: damn you nature!

Just kidding, I love you

Sounds like a cool setup you made, I am really looking forward to next year and seeding way more poppies around to increase my odds of success.

I remember reading good things about the McCormicks but I prefer seeds I can label and know exactly what they are.

I will probably buy some cheap though just for the sake of it next year

Thanks for sharing, and I hope everything works out with your little guys too!

Unfortunately like I said this is my first year growing them so I don't have much tips really  still learning everything.

One thing I can say is start poppies early indoors or in a greenhouse to get some early bloomers  mine were started way early in a heated greenhouse.

are you talking about transplanting them from indoor to outdoor once they've gotten a root system OP?

No though I did attempt that to very poor results, I used various sized pots and eventually moved them outside

I have 2 little mini poppies flowering in the ground right now, probably like 4-5 inches tall each

Thanks! I have a bunch more about to open or getting close so I will take some better photos soon.

Those actually are the Afgans, "Izmir" is just a special variety or something I don't even know

They have opened later than the Persians by quite a bit, but I also planted to seeds at different times and did not keep track so that makes it hard :tongue2:

Any luck with yours Den?

My bad ML, I was referring to the fringed variety, white on bottom pink on top. At least in my head anyway lol
Nah man, mine died off with the heat from my first planting. I did plant again, and we had some cool weather but it's so late already. I replanted late April/ Early May.... So I have a few about 4-5 inches tall, but I don't see them growing much more before the heat returns n either kills them or forces flowering with those pin head size pods lol. Hell some of the smallest plants are just getting their 2nd and 3rd sets of leaves and are never gonna make it. Sadly the cool snap is over, we hit about 75 yesterday, with 80 expected today, and high 80's thru mid 90's thru the week :frown:

What can ya do, there's always next year, and I'm gonna try a fall planting this year. Glad ur look well tho  I need a to get me a greenhouse! :hairmetal: Our spring is so damn short I need a way to extend the growing season.

Those afghans are white on the bottom and pink on top, are you just saying they are fringed afghans or something?

I don't know my poppies at all.

Sorry to hear it is too late for you, at least you tried and there is always next season and the fall like you said.

If you have the space/ $$ definitely get a green house! They are super worth it and you can find some for pretty cheap.

They really come in handy for extending the season, also here in Oregon our weather is so bipolar it helps with things like pissing rain and quick temp shifts.

ROFLMAO bro, you pulled in almost 200 views with that Subject Line! HAHAHAHA!!!

I was referring to something more like these: too bad the color doesn't really pop out in the second one. Not great pics, last petal left on this one lol:

This guy is reversed, pink/ redish at the base and white on top. It was a rogue poppy, I didn't even know it was there until just before it bloomed. Birds or squirrels musta dropped a few of my seed stolen from other areas. Grew right along my neighbors driveway lol

This one is not an Afhan tho, just a random hot pink one lol:

I thought it would be an attention grabber  Also I thought it would be funny to share my midget pods like that.

I can tell fro those pics, those are like the opposite color scheme!

All my afghans so far have looked about the same...

Gotta love seeds spreading! The crown on that hot pink one does look quite a bit like my "afghans"

Also just had my two first India Blues open!

:omgawesome:

Love the color they have.

Here is another of the pink ones:

And the crowns:

Blue foliage? I wish. But the one in the first pic is a bit dark, the second one has a more of a lighter blueish color. I will post pics as more open.

Not sure why they're called blues, as they are def more purple than anything. But beautiful man, nice color :like:

Idk even know what this is, it's another random one from a "pepper box mix" last year. Close in color, but no quite it it seems... Just a basic "lilac" as the best I've gotten as far as a specific strain/ name.

I've noticed most crowns on Somni's seem to look the same or very similar when young. The only real change comes as some grow fatter than others, and some grow longer, etc. some crowns turn completely upright at ripe and others simply stick flat out. But at the open of the flower I've seen most if not all pods, crowns are almost identical.
As for what strain a hot pink and a lilac are, well hell just being somni is fine, I'm good with that lol.
