Big banks fined $5.7 Billion after pleading guilty to global currency conspiracy. * 1
    #21710832 - 05/22/15 02:39 PM (8 years, 8 months ago)

Read it here.

All of us took a bit of a hit for that in our personal finances. Note also the video at the bottom of that page.

I read this every year, time after time. I feel like they just get to keep the money theyve stolen from the public, while their 'fines' are just a kickback to the government to look the other way until it happens again.

5.7 billion is probably a drop in the bucket compared to what all these banks have really taken from the general population.

Found this story circulating on FB

Quote:

During a robbery in Guangzhou, China, the bank robber shouted to everyone in the bank: "Don't move. The money belongs to the State. Your life belongs to you."

Everyone in the bank laid down quietly. This is called "Mind Changing Concept” Changing the conventional way of thinking.

When a lady lay on the table provocatively, the robber shouted at her: "Please be civilized! This is a robbery and not a rape!"

This is called "Being Professional” Focus only on what you are trained to do!

When the bank robbers returned home, the younger robber (MBA-trained) told the older robber (who has only completed Year 6 in primary school): "Big brother, let's count how much we got."

The older robber rebutted and said: "You are very stupid. There is so much money it will take us a long time to count. Tonight, the TV news will tell us how much we robbed from the bank!"

This is called "Experience.” Nowadays, experience is more important than paper qualifications!

After the robbers had left, the bank manager told the bank supervisor to call the police quickly. But the supervisor said to him: "Wait! Let us take out $10 million from the bank for ourselves and add it to the $70 million that we have previously embezzled from the bank”.

This is called "Swim with the tide.” Converting an unfavorable situation to your advantage!

The supervisor says: "It will be good if there is a robbery every month."

This is called "Killing Boredom.” Personal Happiness is more important than your job.

The next day, the TV news reported that $100 million was taken from the bank. The robbers counted and counted and counted, but they could only count $20 million. The robbers were very angry and complained: "We risked our lives and only took $20 million. The bank manager took $80 million with a snap of his fingers. It looks like it is better to be educated than to be a thief!"

This is called "Knowledge is worth as much as gold!"

The bank manager was smiling and happy because his losses in the share market are now covered by this robbery.

This is called "Seizing the opportunity.” Daring to take risks!

So who are the real robbers here?

Thank you for not contesing the "pleading guilty to global currency conspiracy" part.

You are right that no good will come of the $5.7B but then notion that international conspiracies on the highest level in fact occur is news to at least some.

It was the whole point of my original post but Supa couldn't seem to get it.  And specifically who do these guys want to put in jail?  I asked for a name.  The Board of Directors?  CEO?  The may well have had no knowledge of what was going on.

I bet the government took this no jail deal because they were going to have a bitch of a time getting a conviction.  To the banks it's only money.  They've got lots of that.

The only solution would be to abolish the companies and dissolve them, and spread the profits back to the american people.

Let everyone get their money out of the banks, and then just slap down every fucking business that's corrupt.

It'll never happen though.

When it comes to large scale collusion between big corporations, there is almost no disincentive to not collude. In some ways there is much stronger incentives to collude, as the law doesn't have the necessary teeth deal with these kinds of conduct. 5.7 bn sounds like a lot but it is nothing in comparison to the profits they would have made. Let alone the damage to traders and industries. Majority of products are priced on the U.S. dollar, so when they appreciate artificially the value of the USD, it burns almost the entire worlds trading system making products more expensive and causing global price rises. And the value of the dollar relative to other nations has flow on effects for interest rates also. Which again globally effects investors and in particular countries with strong trade links. The effect of this really is monumentous on the global economy and it is criminal. The board members should be held criminally liable if aware and disqualified for life from being company directors.

This happened in a key case in aus with garbage disposal companies. I can't remember the name but they colluded to raise profits and maintain prices in a market over a period of years and reaped massive profits. When discovered they get only a small slap on the wrists. Companies can do these thing strategically knowing they will still profit even if prosecuted.

But its a complex issue because what are tht supposed to do in this instance? Sink an entire industry? In aus new laws have a few diff methodologies of how to fine colluding companies, it was something like total profit gained (if discernible, which it often isn't), a set amount if up to a certain amount (500k-couple million) or 10% of annual profits in the year the collision took place - which I think is getting more towards the required ranges. $5.7 is not enough for this kind of conduct. The banks would be laughing at this

Not directly, but it's very likely their actions have artificially influenced global prices and interest rates, and likely making the things you purchase cost more then they should at some stage, on a global scale. Which is in a way indirect theft.

Anyways they need to collapse the American dollar now so that I can get more mileage on my money in vegas and buy myself some new speakers and headphones.

The governments control the central banks but if you like I'll play along.  Why is it OK when central banks do it?

This is essentially arcane bullshit that may or may not have fucked over some investors.  The government took a settlement because they knew it would be hard to prove and the banks took a settlement because they knew it was cheaper and in spite of all the kneejerk banks suck bullshit it was pretty much meaningless.

The governments appoint the officials of central banks and have indirect control of them because they can choose to reappoint them, but they are not directly government controlled.

It's acceptable when central banks manipulate interest rates and the supply of money DOMESTICALLY as they are operating within their legislative scope and function. It's also important to note that central banks don't collude with other central banks in international markets. Collusion is the key here. They are destroying the natural free market and healthy competition that constrains actions of these kind. That's where the illegality is. Central banks manipulate their currency to suit their domestic needs and stabilise/strengthen their own economy domestically.

It's not just about the investors who directly lost on the other side of their transactions, it's the effect on the global economy that their actions would have that is the issue on my eyes. As I said, price of everything is based off of the USD. This it had flow on effects for the global market

That's the issue particularly with insider trading, and even more so forex trading that it would be extremely tough to prove. But they were obviously aware of it, atleast enough to pressure them to publicly settle. My issue is that it's not enough. 5.7 bn for 5 years of collusion in a 5 trillion per day market. The real cost and profit of it is unquantifiable. It's unheard of

No, the central banks manipulate money internationally as well as domestically and they are controlled by the governments.  Don't be naive.  They have a certain amount of autonomy but in the end they are 100% controlled.  Look at what China is doing.

I seriously doubt they made a shitload of money with this legerdemain and I absolutely doubt it extracted much wealth from the global market for anybody other than other currency traders.  Currency rates fluctuate constantly even without manipulation.  I have no reason to believe that this had any deleterious impact on the overall world economy.

Even if the damage was minimal which I dont think it was, it's the removal of the free market that is at issue. And in financial organisations as integral and important as this, over an extended period of time? Unacceptable! Even if we put the global impact issue to the side. Every trader on the other side of their large scale trades in the 5 year period got screwed. It would be almost impossible to prove and track though. Forex is more volitile then your ex wife (lol)

Particularly im suspicious of how quickly and strongly the USD seems to have recovered from its collapse in the 09-10 GFC, with no real fix to the economy applied. I think this may have had something to do with it! But that is speculation.

To see if it would have had any effect on the global economy we need more info about the magnitude, frequency and effect of the transactions I guess. I think it's plausible though

I agree there is an element of vicarious control by governments exerted over central banks... And they obviously work together with their government to suit their objectives. But they don't collude with other nations central banks and governments.

What is China doing??

China is totally holding the value of its currency in the toilet in order to support their export of slave labor products.  There is no such thing as a free currency market.  The very existence of the Euro puts the lie to any notion of that.

Yes but they are just doing that to serve their own economic purposes. That's fine. They aren't colluding with other nations.

The euro Union is no different to federation of the states for economic benefit. And it simplifies the global economy. It's a good thing, rather then having 50 different exchange rates and currency making foreign trade a nightmare

Eitherway these 5 banks screwed up in a big way and there needs to be much more punitive action taken then just this 5.7 bn fine split between 5 organisations

I don't think so.  This is government thuggery.  Your justification for China's actions could just as easily be applied to the banks and no, the Eurozone is not analagous to the states.

reagardless of which way they are trying to influence the currency, i'm just saying they are influencing it for their own purposes and on their own. they are not colluding with other nations and world banks to secure commons goals. china is doing what is best for china. there is nothing wrong with that at all. thats what the central banks purpose is - to support the nations economy in the best way it sees fit. if their philosophies or goals differ to ours there is nothing wrong with that. the issue with these 5 banks is that they colluded together and removed the constraint of natural competition in the market. thats heavily illegal in any kind of trading and makes it so that it is not an even playing field for everyone. not that it ever really is when you consider how well resourced the big players in the market are, but thats a legitimate advantage atleast

also as a side note some of the enforcement strategies of some of the regulators are ridiculous. in aus they have these things called infringement notices. where basicalyl the regulator will approach the infringing company and say - ' hey, you're doing "this", we know you are doing "this", cease what you're doing, pay us a fine of "x dollars", and in return we will agree not to publicly prosecute you for "this" '. and they specifically say that it is not a public admission of guilt. so basically, they just agreed to fork out 150k for an infringement they are denying?? is that ass backwards or what? its done to prevent liability and other people suing them on the basis of admission of guilt but still. its all smoke and mirrors. especially for white collar crime, the punishments do not fit the crimes. they just get a slap on the wrist and try to hurd them into playing nice. providing financial penalties, which are paid for out of the COMPANIES ASSETS. so the individuals often lose nothing themselves and face no real consequences

my dad used to work in the state government as an exec for 15 years, he told me all about shit like this in government. he said, whenever a scandal happens, and its put on the news, as it always seems to be... and the minister goes on TV in an interview saying " this person has our full support in the matter ", dad said that is 100% political code for GAWN. fired and gawn! lol. i seem to encounter alot of examples of these similar kinds of public facades as time goes on
