Pleurotus populinus
    #21710341 - 05/22/15 12:31 PM (8 years, 8 months ago)

I found a tree full of what looks like P populinus.  I've never collected them.  Are there any worrisome look alikes?

If you think they are the correct mushrooms, what you should do is collect some and post an ID request here! Make sure and take lots of pictures(for close-ups, use the "macro" setting, if your camera has one, the icon for macro usually looks like a flower). Take some pics of them while they are still growing on the tree, take some pics of the cap and some pics of the gills, don't forget to take some pics if you notice any of them have developed stems, which can happen. Oh yeah, and get a picture of the actual tree and maybe close-ups of the bark & some of the leaves, if you are not certain of the trees genus/species.

All of this might not be necessary in all cases, but it is a good habit to develop so that when you post an ID request, you supply any and all of the info that is likely to be needed to properly identify the mushroom. By doing this you help us help you!

There is a template on the sample ID request post located near the top of this mushroom hunting & identification forum.

Regarding AMBC comment
Here are the specifics of the specimen

Found in Northeast Wisconsin Late May
Attached to a dead poplar tree
not much scent
no color change with bruising
gills attached and run down a short stem
stems merge in clusters
Spore print on white paper after about 3 hrs- not much to see- I am doing an overnight on aluminum foil
Images in-situ and removed, including cross section

I have uploaded images but I can't seem to get them into this posting

You can apparently distinguish P.populinus from ostreatus and others by the spore size, the spores will be slightly longer than ostreatus.

I found what I thought was P.ostreatus a week or so ago, then I learned about P.populinus and its host on apsen as well as being a typically early oyster and I reexamined my find. Looked at the spores, confirmed they were longer, and went out and confirmed the tree it was on was a fallen aspen.

The spore print is also said to be more whitish than the usual lilac, I had no luck printing mine.
