Clumpy Grains

So, here I am, just prepared 35 qts of spawn material that I have never used before thinking I have just prepared the best grains ever. Well, after I pressure cooked 10qts of the material I look at the jars and I have busted grains on the bottom and they are clumpy as fuck....
WHY!? What causes clumpy grains? Out of hundreds upon hundreds of jars of spawn material I have never seen such fucked up shit. And no, im not going to inoculate clumpy grains. I refuse to spoon out that shit later.
I'm adding some gypsum to my jars and gonna run another 10 to see if the gypsum will resolve the issue.

What grain was it? And yes, gypsum would help.

Looks like millet. If it is, by itself, it won't hold moisture very well.
That being said over soaking them and not allowing the outside to dry will cause such

Starchy grains.. I agree millet. Also one of the grains in bird seed. Personally I love grains with hulls. Oats comes to mind. Zero clumping.
From my experience with starchy grains like bird seed you have to soak and simmer with gypsum and don't rinse them or drain the gypsum water until simmered. Once simmered you rinse them out in a strainer and it rinses all the starch out, then lay on news paper and point a fan on high at it for about 45 minutes to an hour. Then load the jars and it'll be wayyyy better

I haven't soaked in years and years. I just almost boil my grains, let em sit for an hour or so, drain and rise super well, then drip dry overnight.

Anonymous Said: That's millet, best tek to follow is Foomans WBS tek. Millet is one of my favorite grains. The trick with millet is that you load it slightly underhydrated and while its PCing the water that wouldn't steam off is absorbed. This is important because millet is very finicky, if the grain is at all wet on the outside when you pc, and is completely hydrated at that point to, it will explode. Foomans method is a no soak method and works well.
i wanted to add this for anyone who uses the search function

That'd probably work too if you made sure to have no burst grains. With whole oats I just simmer/boil it for an hour, no soaking , no rinsing and no clumping. Steam dried by flipping in a strainer. The hulls are thick and hold the starchy interior well. I'm so happy I made the switch

Hey, that works for WBS and popcorn too! btw, popcorn smells sweet when cooked and holds a shit ton of water. I really like popcorn.
Here are some popcorn jars with ALT#7. Half the jars in the picture are being hydrated for a spawn run (Tray 1) and the other half are not being hydrated for the spawn run (tray 2).

im a tool. i am wanting to get my hands on some oats. I have not got to try them yet but one of my buddys loves them. I wouldnt mind getting my hands on some rye again too. I have had really good experiences with rye. I have a feeling though that my main spawn material will be popcorn because of the consistency, color, and smell (mostly smell). I dont mind spending 25$ for 50 pounds on popcorn. The smell is worth it. My house currently smells like ass and none of my family members are to happy with me.
Yeah dude, fuck that starch. I just laid out 25 qts of that starchy milet on my stove to dry overnight. If it;s still wet then im just gonna pitch it. Then make sure I dont over hydrate the next batch. I need to hurry up and inject a whole bunch of spawn material with my liquid cultures to fill up these green houses. I;m running out of time. Im gonna have to pull out the green houses soon and put in a tent for growing cannabis.

These trays are 20 inches long, 10 inches wide, and two inches deep. I can fit 10 qts worth of material per tray. 6 trays per green house.
