Best distortion pedal?

My dad is asking me to make a Christmas list, and he asked me to think of something for my grandparents to buy me that costs or adds up to $100. I thought about it, and I could really use a new distortion pedal for my guitar. What, in your opinion, is the best kind(keeping in mind that I play mainly alternative rock) for under $100?

Well, if you had a Line 6 amp...you would have no need for a distortion pedal, or pretty much any pedal, ever.. because of their dazzling and extensive array of amazing, dynamic, distortion tones and effects. But yeah... you want a Boss Metal Zone. About $80, (I think?) and is the most versatile (not to mention durable) distortion pedal period. Dial in anywhere from sweet and mild overdrive to insane metal crunch and everything inbetween. It also does wonders for sustain. Best distortion pedal I have ever heard.

yeah, if you want anything from Vai to Metallica to Tool, you want the Metal Zone. you can get it used for half that, but 80$ is about new price. It's extremely durable. Also, ProCo Rat.
I've got the Line 6 stomp pedal AM4, it emulates amazing historical amps, and sounds amazing. I've got 2 other line 6 stomps too, they're the shit.

Line 6 amps are SHIT.
And you do not want a Boss metal zone.
What you do want is an Ibanez TS-9(MAKE SURE IT'S TS-9 AND NOT TS-7) Tubescreamer.
It is green, that is how you will know that it is not the TS-7 Tubescreamer.

yeah i think my friend has the metal zone. i just use my amp's distortion channel with two gains. i have the b-52 lg100a. i know i know its just solid state but its a nice cheap head for my stack. and im madly in love with it. this christmas im lookin for a new guitar... (lookin at the aria arx-200) or a wah (lookin at the bad horsie 2 or the boss v-wah). im havin trouble choosing the wah because i want a really versitle wah but i really like how the bad horsie is switchless... only thing is i heard its more rock wah and its not so funky. i guess ill just have to test them. sorry for jacking this thread but if anybody has anything to tell me about wah's please PM me.

The reason I prefer having a distortion pedal instead of using my amp's distortion is cuz I like to shift between clean and distorted in my songs, and pushing the distortion switch on my amp in the middle of a song kinda fucks up my playing.
About wah pedals, I have a Cybaby wah pedal, which is a good, classic-sounding wah. It uses a switch, so it isn't as easy to use as the Bad Horsey, but I think it would give you a good, funky sound.

Line 6 amps are AMAZING
Most models come with 4 programmable channels that you can pre-set.. that are switchable through a 4 button footswitch. The guitarists in my band use the first for clean, second for clean with chorus and some delay, third for super heavy distortion for rhythm, and fourth for distortion with some effects for solos. So no reaching for the amp in the middle of your playing if you have a footswitch. But again, I say the Metal Zone is the way to go. The Ibanez Tubescreamer is also good, but I still prefer the metal zone.

Line 6's Flextone's and Vetta's are pretty fucking cool, but stay away from the Spider amps....those things fucking suck. The line 6 POD's are real sweet too, but too bad they lean for studio use more than live.
I don't really know too much about single effects pedals though, I have one big footboard, a Korg

I love my Marshall Jackhammer. It has a mid-shift/scoop on it, which lets you do so much to contour your sound right on the pedal. I sampled a lot of pedals when I bought mine and it came down to either the Boss Metal Zone or the Marshall. I took the marshall. It really depends on what kind of sound you are looking for though. I highly suggest going to a music store to sample all of their pedals and decide for yourself.
I have some mp3s of a cd my band recorded using the Marshall Jackhammer as the primary distortion pedal if you are interested in hearing it in action.

Actually, I just realized I also have another cd my band did where we used a boss distortion pedal that we borrowed for the recording. So, if you want, I can send you both recordings so that you can compare the two pedals.

my amp distortion works well for me because it came with a footswitch. its a nice footswitch too, it can switch between the two gain setting s on channel 2 and i can also turn my reverb on and off. and yeah ive been looking more into the bad horsey, of course nothing will help my decision better than going to a guitar store and checking them out.

I also have a floorboard(Digitech RP2000), but there's something fucked up about the volume on it, and besides, I'm starting like stompboxes better cuz you can switch individual effects on and off separately, rather than switching from one sound to another completely different one.
Shroomism: My friend has a Line6 amp he says he's willing to sell, but I can't afford it right now, and it doesn't have a footswitch.

get an amp that has a foot switch so you can switch from clean to overdrive.
distortion pedals are only good for recording. If you are playing live with a distortion pedal, I feel sorry for you.

I don't think he's playing live just yet.
Silversoul.. yeah the line 6 footswitches are sold seperately.. about $60 if I'm not mistaken (ouch).. but they are invaluable.
If you're just jamming in your room or whatever, a cheap distortion pedal should hold you off for a while.

for versatility shroomism hit it with the metal zone- yet I would reccomend to anyone the all around best cheap pedal the zoom 505 multi effects unit, its like 80-100$.
you can create a seemingly endless array of effects( great for tripping ) and the distortion is great. although alone the phaser, flanger, chorus, and delay are fairly weak..but mixing effects and playing with the subtlties is cool.
Its strange until I bought that pedal I was a firm believer in single units only..but listening back to the old recordings, I can clearly hear my distortion and it is hands down better sound than my band mates..highly recomended

yeah my first pedal was the Zoom505ii, and it was great for messing around in my room. Once I started playing in a band, it was tough, because it's hard to go between effects. And I started to wear it down too much and the input got messed up. I really recommend it for messing around, it's cheap and it's versatile.

I like the no frills, simple Boss Distortion pedal. Has a good tube overdrive sound to it. It's probably not the greatest thing if you're into metal or something like that.

what kind of amp do you have?
i don't think any petal can beat the distortion you can get from a tube amp. if you've got a tube amp, you could get a pedal made for the amp that flips the overdrive on\off. they make those for most of them.
if you've got a solid state amp, i'd say get a boss pedal of some sort. the metal zone is pretty nice. those all-in-one boards and whatnot usually aren't that great.
