Temporary Server Issues...
#2170891 - 12/10/03 06:34 AM (20 years, 3 months ago) |
|

As some of you know, we have been undergoing some managerial re-structuring this week. As part of this, we have moved the shroomery.org to a temporary server, and this has caused a few problems, due to setting up the new server, domain name server propagation, and the server being slightly under-powered for the task at hand. Most of you long-term members will appreciate these problems from past changes, and much like those earlier problems, these to shall pass into history very soon.
The domain name propagation should be complete within the next twelve hours. Some of you may be missing posts, which were made on the old server -- feel free to make those pots again, whatever the topic.
As far as the server hardware goes, we are on a temporary server, which was graciously provided by one of our supporters. Over the next few weeks, several staff members will be contributing funds to buy adequate, new, server hardware, and this should be up and running by the end of the month, if not sooner.
Please report any errors you may encounter, so we can correct them. We apologize for any inconvenience, but ultimately, the community will benefit from these inconveniences.
Thank you for your patience,
The Shroomery Staff

> I would like to make a donation if I could
First off, many thanks for your support and offer to the community. However, we would graciously decline any membership donations at the current time as this is only a temporary issue and we don't want to have to pull funds from the membership just to keep this place alive. The administration shouldn't have a problem getting new servers online by January - it is really only a matter of how quickly we can round up good equipment and get it in Vamp's hands so he can set it all up. With any luck, this could be accomplised within a matter of a couple weeks - but realistically could take up to a month.
I do want to offer my heartfelt appreciation to everyone who's love for this community is placed above all else - all the members and especially all the technically oriented volunteers who have spent long nights (often times seeping over into the mornings of the next day) over the last week to ensure that we had two alternate backup servers at the ready. Though they may be modest, they deserve the credit.. so a bigass thank you to Vampire, Ythan, Seuss, papaver, Anno, and matts - without you fine people we might not even be here right now. Your consistent efforts in working out the bugs and reconfiguring software to work at an optimum level for the hardware we currently have is nothing short of astounding. Much love to all of you and the entire community for sticking these rough seas out, headed on course for a brighter future.
If anyone has any questions about matters - you may post them here or contact me on AIM, my screen name is exigent maven. DNS propagation is over 90% complete now, so this is our new home. Given some time (not too long), we will have this community running better than ever.

I think it would help out a bunch to disable some of the eyecandy features, a thread with 4 posts caused 55 queries, disbale things like # of users browsing the forums, disable sigs and avatars, the jump menu, the stats at the bottom of each page, pretty much disable most of the stuff that isnt NEEDED for the time being that the site is on this severally underpowered machine.
Most BB softwares have a section for performance in the admin section.
-------------------- And for immaculate. What im about to say will suprise many because i dont say things like this often. And the only reason your getting the privilege today is due to a severally poor mood.
SHUT THE FUCK UP! Leave that god damned shit in OTD.

The server has got more memory 10 minutes ago, and now it should work much better. Not as good as the old server(s) did, but it should be a visible improvement.
Thank you Vampire!

Yes, think are running much smoother now thanks to the very hard work of Vampire999 and Seuss -- who have both been working tirelessly to to improve performance these past few days.
We are still on a slightly underpowered, temporary, server, but they have made many, many, small improvements to both the software and hardware. A new server will be on its way soon, which will have adequate power.
Right now things are better, but we're not out of the woods yet. This will largely be a two steps forward, one step back, affair over the next several days, so bare with us.

Early - Mid next week. The parts for the new server are on the way and then it just needs to be built.
Vampire is taking care of all that and we will be on that new server as soon as humanly possible

No, but we are looking at possible relocating to a foreign location at some time in the future. I'm scoping out a colocation facility in Bhutan, and if it seems reasonable, then I will relocate there and personally administer the hardware.

No, it will actually be hosted at the same facility as the old site was in Arizona for the time being as another user has generously granted us up to two months of free useage on his collocated hosting rack
We are actively searching for a new/appropriate lease now - and may stay at the current facility for another term or until we can find the necessary technical contacts in Canada to handle on-site maintenance issues for the server. So while Canada would be preferred, it simply isn't feasible at the current time. Over the next year our goal will be to get this place into a very solid condition though, and we will try to tie up any loose ends. Many thanks to all the volunteers who have been helping us keep this place gliding KY style
The new server should be up by Monday, but possibly a few days later. It's lookin' to be 4 Gigs of processing power coupled with 4 Gigs of ECC RAM - so there should be no problems whatsoever once we get things configured correctly. Then in January or ASAP we will get a second server online to manage the front-end static portions of the website.

I guess what may have confused me is that it is in both places in threads. At the top of the page it is on the right and on the bottom of the page is on the left. I guess this satisfies any user.
