Scientific evidence on benefits of casing?
    #21708452 - 05/21/15 10:57 PM (8 years, 8 months ago)

As the title would suggest, I was wondering if there was anyone out there who could point me in the direction of actual evidence on the pro/cons of casing bulk substrates?

Many thanks

Well commercial farmers use a casing layer. That would lead me to believe that it is beneficial. Otherwise why would they waste the time and money to apply it. But as a home cultivator that uses a monotub to fruit, it's not necessary but it does help.

Because p. cubensis is illegal there are little/no scientific studies, unfortunately.  That's why this forum is such an invaluable resource.

As far as cubes go, casings are beneficial for maintaining a proper microclimate at the surface of the substrate. If you live in a really dry climate like I do, a casing layer is the best way to prevent side pins.

What shall we say, shall we call it by a name
As well to count the angels dancing on a pin
Water bright as the sky from which it came
And the name is on the earth that takes it in
