Under my current philosophical and scientific understanding time seems to exist to me. Only instead of being linear it seems cyclical.

haven't read through all the responses yet.
but read up a bit on neuroplasticity. the brain is wired and configured according to experiences garnered through the 5 senses. the brain is constantly rewiring itself to learn and adapt to new experiences. this is what the past really is, rather, a reference point from which to analyze and observe and reprogram yourself to learn and adapt
think of how a computer stores memory. long after a file has been transfered, it stays in-place according to its new structure and paradigm. the data is not still being transfered, it's already been transfered from one state to the next, and is at that point awaiting the next transfer
the past stops existing the moment after it is born

Envix said: if only i could forget this narrative my brain keeps telling me is real.
everything that's needed is right here and now. why is so much time and energy invested in this fantasy that only exists in my head
past and future - swirling like a merry-go-round through my mind day-in and day-out dreams built upon wishful expectations, anxious fears, nostalgic memories and remorseful mistakes
these are all just stories we tell ourselves to give our lives meaning. everything that's real is right here in this moment.
plans are good, goals are good, and learning from the past is good. but why do we invest so much emotion and concentration on these imaginary stories that we make up?
and no, your life is not fake. it is in fact your life's story that is fake.
you as an organism are real. and your interactions with the environment are real. physical and emotional and social dynamics and all that. the meaning you give to things which so influence your emotional dynamics is just built upon language and syntax, which is just a bunch of symbols we made up
It's funny because I totally agree with the division you're drawing between the organism and the life story, but I came to a different conclusion about which "I" should identify with.
it's kinda hard not to identify with the life you're witnessing constantly.
i have a decent job, i have goals and dreams n stuff, i'm not super old yet, i have a lot invested in my future, and a lot of past regrets like doing nothing or not as much as i could have. these are all fantasies and fake, and though they have benefit they seem to drain a lot out of me.
i've taken psychedelics, i've had my "ego dissolved".
that shit aint permanent. not for me anyway.
and even when i get to that point, half the time i'm left with a sense of petrifying despair and pointlessness.
the other half i'm so blissfully engulfed in life that my awareness is focused only on the sensation of living.
that shit aint permanent either.

Thinking about that kinda stuff will make you mad as a hatter.
A question that has always perplexed me is, what if you deleted your memories, would you still be you? or would be just that pure thing under ourselves... It would be naked and disassociated ready to be reprogrammed with language and environment.

Only this is consciousness we're talking about and every one of us is a tiny part of it. It can totally be observed through the right set of eyes.

OP I see where you're coming from, dwelling on the past is pointless and being anxious about the future is also pointless. It's good to learn from mistakes, have goals, and be aware but being mindful/in the moment is really the way to live imo. It's much more enjoyable that way and if you don't focus on the present it'll flash right before your eyes.

Bingo! We have a winner!

nah bro, it takes like a day or so. In rare circumstances, you can fly back to yesterday in a plane. But watch out if you do, because matches won't burn, and beer won't have carbonation anymore. plus, if you stay in yesterday for too long, the monsters that destroy yesterday to make room for tomorrow will get you

I feel like everything is fake, disconnected from myself and the outside world. Felt like this for around 5 year now, though ive been feeling better recently and havent had any feelings like this. Now you got me thinking about it and im starting to trip.

Makes everything more rewarding and challenging that way. You die in real life, you die 5ever.
