Possible magic in Golden Gate Park?
    #2170714 - 12/09/03 04:27 AM (13 years, 1 month ago)

I stumbled upon these nasty looking things on my hunt in Golden Gate Park last Saturday. They were the only two around and I didn't even bother to pick them up. They were purplish blue on the caps edges but I didn't know if this was psilocybin or just rot? Stems were pure white and they were growing in a damp-barky area.

those are Coprinus, probably C. lagopus.

the blueish coloration is the natural color of the caps in this inactive species.

blue coloration does not always indicate the presence of psilocybian compounds, even if it is a bruising reaction [as in the bluing boletes] and especialy when it is the natural color.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

Thank you, if you look closely at the picture you can see that the cap is a brownish color that fades lighter and the edges appear to have been stained bluish purplish maybe from the damage it suffered? They looked like they had been messed with?

the mushrooms look like that [rotten] due to an autodigestive process called deliquescence, which is exhibited by mushrooms of the genus Coprinus.
