Hi Shroomers, Have not posted here before but thought a great way to kick off would be to share my experience with Amanita Muscaria as a delicious edible mushroom.
Some friends and I foraged some Beautiful Fly Agaric in north west Victoria recently, we had heard that when prepared properly they are a brilliant and unique tasting mushroom. Naturally we had to try.
We prepared these by first, steeping them in boiling water for about 5 minutes, Draining the water and repeating the process once more.
Next we divided the caps into roughly quarters, placed them on a baking tray with some grease paper and put them in the oven on 150 C for 10 minutes (This was just to be sure that the ibotenic acid and muscimol was well and truly out, In retrospect probably not necessary and potentially made the mushrooms tougher)

I made a quick batter of a cup and a half flour. A teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce and enough water to create a smooth batter (around a cup depending on preference).

On high heat in a small pan these were shallow fried in sunflower oil for 30 seconds each side, placed on paper towel to drain excess oil and served lightly salted.

They were honestly a real treat, Firm texture with a certain creaminess to the flesh similar to that of sweetbread. Really, Delicious stuff. If you are comfortable with processing these mushrooms to remove the psychoactive compounds I would seriously give frying these bad boys a try.
It was very cool to have some food that was found and harvested by my own hands. I found it enchanting to connect with my food like this. Definitely will be cooking with these again, Stay tuned as I have a feeling these shrooms would make an amazing risotto and will be experimenting with different recipes for these as soon as we go out to find more
DISCLAMER: I by no means recommend novices follow this simple guide to prepare Amanita Muscaria without expert supervision. Though my friends and I felt no ill effects from eating mushrooms prepared in this way I would advise all those interested to ensure they have researched these mushrooms properly and understand potential risks involved with their ingestion.

Nice. Never thought to eat Amanita Muscarira as just a food item. They look pretty yum.
What gave you the idea to cleanse and fry them to eat instead of trying for an 'experience' from them? Normally when I hear something about these mushrooms, I only hear about people trying to trip off them...

Cheers, A friend brought up that it was possible so we did some research and decided it was worth a shot. I haven't ever tripped this particular mushroom, I probably will some time in the future but for now I just wanted something tasty to eat lol.
