Shredding Straw - Any comments on Weed Whacker vs Mulcher Vac? - thoughts on this potential setup?
    #21697842 - 05/19/15 10:19 AM (8 years, 8 months ago)

Greetings All,

After observing the dismal performance of Phoenix Mushrooms (AX strain from Aloha) on Pine Pellets (in my area hardwood pellets and straw pellets are not available) - I have to go with shredded straw now...

From what I have read on various posts on this topic - the top two methods seem to be either
A) Putting straw in a trash can, cutting the lid so the weed whacker can go into the bucket but minimize the spewing of particles out
B) Putting the straw on the driveway and sucking it up with a mulcher vac - if needed, unload the collection bag on the driveway again and repeat.

Has anyone tried both methods? - if so, does one have an advantage over the other/faster/easier?

I was thinking the ultimate less fuss/easier setup would be:
- Getting a mulcher vac that has the option of being connected to a 30-50gal trash can - like this:
Black and Decker Mulcher Vac
optional Leaf Collection System

- Proceed with putting an entire bale on the driveway, mulch vac until trash can full

- (assuming mulched result is not satisfactory) - connect the mulcher vac to another trash can, and use the mulch vac on the trash can that was just filled

- This second trashcan (or maybe the first - if the mulcher does not need a second run) - has a spigot installed - so I can just fill the straw filled can with hydrated lime water, and when cold pasteurization is completed (overnight?), just open the spigot and have it drained to various parts of my backyard?

I've used one of these. It's faster then the mulcher vac.

An electric hedge trimmer works well when it's in a bale form.

I have used a hedge trimmer, weed whacker and leaf vac with collection system. I settled on the leaf vac with collection system (without one it is too slow). I run the collection system into a 55 gallon drum that is lined with a drum trash bag and pull the bag out when full. I can make short work of a bale. I haven't used the worx mulcher, but was curious how it worked compared to a normal leaf vac.

Well I used one of these.

Complete waste of time as the straw was too long! Errm... plus you need a tractor to drive it.

Oh and in case you are interested this is what 300kg of (not very) shredded straw looks like.

Is there a gate with blades on the outside of that massive shredder? I have a MTD shredder i use for leaves. It shreds around to 1/2" and uses flail blades attached to the outside diameter of the impeller and a "screen shredder" on the outlet of the turbine. This forces all the materials to be pinned against the screen and sliced by the flail blades. It works really well. If you own that piece of equipment it may be worth while to modify it. Be sure to balance it before bolting it back on or you'll have a dancing and possibly exploding shredder.

Nope. Ditched the whole lot. Now I use pellets, 3.5T of sub (wet) fits on one pallet (dry).
