Asking for feedback on my first grow
    #21705249 - 05/21/15 05:14 AM (8 years, 8 months ago)

Hi guys, I just started growing using a kit. Next project is PF tek, and a Azurescens patch is on the way. Finally I hope to pick some Semilanceata next fall. So far for my short introduction.

About my first grow. The first flush has just been picked (110 grams). What I noticed is that during the last few days the growing slowed, and the caps look a little shriveled. Is this ok and what could be the cause? The delay in grow could be by the drop in temperature due to weather (to 18-19c, which was 20-24 Celsius during the day)

Furthermore, do you see anything wrong with my Little Saints? Some white stuff (mycelium?) on the caps, and some blue (bruising?). Are any of these molds?

Any tips for my next flush and or grow from the ground up?

the pics:

Thanks!

hey welcome to shroomery :mushroom2:

in the first picture the spawn looks funny. it looks fully colonized on the top 75% but they bottom 25% or so looks weak and wispy.

one reason it may have stalled is because you have a large amount of fruits drawing water from the sub (basically like a reservoir) and it may have gotten dry, and since mushrooms are mainly water growth stalled.

sorry I cannot say what is up with your fruits but it definitely looks like something - is there any sour smell?

Well I probably did not choose a preferred suplier for this kit. The bottom has no substrate or grain in it, but what I guess must be some moisture holding stuff, or filler. They smell well, but at touch feel really weak, mushy, spongy. But I cannot compare since it is the first grow.

Exactly my guess, that there was not enough water left to continue growing.

Should I toss them and try again? Or do you think they are safe to dry and use?

I think I have had mushrooms turn out like this before - I dried them and they had a pretty terrible smell while drying and after.
Mine where edible but honestly if I had excess I would have just tossed them.

get them drying asap because spongy (I assume kind of slimy?) isn't great - healthy mushrooms are firm

as for what's next. take a tissue clone from a cluster to agar read here: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/18430998

^ I agree about the clone.  I'll eat about any shrooms with in reason.  I've had fresh ones in the field right off the pie which unquestionably has the same if not more bacteria residing on it.

I'm going to attempt another flush from this kit. If they grow well, can I add a little extra water to the box at some time?

Don't eat squishy mushrooms. You wouldn't eat a squishy button mushroom or portabella. These are still food.

We can't say what's wrong with your kit because you don't know how it was prepared. This is why we go through the work of doing everything ourselves.

When trying to dry, the mushrooms started to smell horrible sour, so out they go. The suplier whom I sent the pics noted a mold and blamed not sterile working. In their grow instructions they make you put water in the bag. Maybe a bit of that got in the kit. Anyway, accept the loss (man I loved taking care of the little saints, loved seeing them grow, even my gf participated in the daily misting ritual) and go for the do it yourself from scratch. Much more fun that way anyway.

The reason I started with a kit was because I wanted to eat a few shrooms again (been 2011 since last time) to discover if I want to make such a long time commitment of cultivation with the Little Saints. And then take a spore print from the kit and start there...

Ah well, we'll see. Thanks for the good tips, and the awesome community! Have been reading here for some time already.

I respectfully buried my mushrooms in the garden ;-)
the contaminated box I mixed with some moisturized beach chips, manure, and fertilized garden soil and but in a hole in the ground next to my Garden Buddha. No expectations here, but who knows...

This is the results of the other project I'm working on. I got some Azurescens spawn bag from Azarius (not the same supplier as the kit) and got some beach chips from them that where not fully colonized, hardly any mycelium seen on them. So this takes ages to colonize...

Again, I should have done it myself... Can I take that one chip that seems to colonize well and put it in a faster growing medium to get it started well?
