Trichocereus Black Spot
    #21705079 - 05/21/15 02:06 AM (8 years, 8 months ago)

I received some cuttings in a trade. I have no experience with these, just so you are all aware. From what I read, it is best to give them little light while they're callousing over, so that they don't elongate, and grow thin at the top. I left them in the box for the past couple weeks. I just opened it to check them out today, and this is what I have.

I would also like to point out that the calloussing area has some variation of color from pink to black. It doesnt look too hot. Suggestions?

I read somewhere that radical changes in light exposer can cause this sort of infection. I also read that it is not particularly serious, but they were speaking of rooted plants. I feel like since this plant is not rooted it could have more of a negative effect. Its sad, because these cuttings were very nice!

The tip looks to have taken a knock in transit. Trichs are tough though and usually pull through ok. There will be some scarring from both the impact and the black spots.

I had this one suffer the same, and growth did continue no problem:

For black spots, this will explain why they happen:

Discolouration on the callous isn't a trouble as long as the callous is firm.

In the last part of the first paragraph on what you linked there.  Is that suggesting eating cacti could lead to kidney stones?

I would thimk that it would have to be a significant part of your regular diet to cause kidney stones. If you drink too much milk you are also prone to kidney stones due to the excess calcium.

Yes, this black spot looks pretty much like a dent caused by pressure.

I know because sadly a few weeks ago a heavy thunderstorm broke open my window and forced some of my trichs to fall down onto the floor.
One of them fell right onto a rock. The wound turned very dark within a day, remaining brown for weeks.

It' been about a month now and the wound seems to close, so the healingprocess is going on pretty well. Also the discoloration is getting brighter and lighter with every day.

So no problem there, trichs always survive.

You shouldn't be callousing in a box, they need airflow to prevent rot.  Other than that it looks fine, the black impact mark won't hurt a thing.

Yeah, I figured I would leave them out of the box from now on. I know stagnant air can lead to bacterial and fungal growth. I learned that from my other hobby ;-)
