Ecstasy lab, 20 pounds of pot found at Akron home
AKRON, Ohio — Two men are accused of running a multi-faceted drug lab where they grew a large amount of marijuana and manufactured ecstasy and other hallucinogens.
Matthew Mullaney, 32, and Conor McCaffery, 27, both face nine felony charges and several misdemeanor charges in connection with the drug bust that happened about 8 p.m. Tuesday. Neither is in police custody and warrants were issued for their arrests.
Two others face charges after the raid at the home in the 700 block of Silvercrest Avenue.
Akron police originally went to the home to check on the welfare of a 4-year-old girl after someone called police and said the girl lived in a drug house. She was not at the home and police later found her safe.
A woman shut the door on police and refused to open it. Investigators smelled marijuana while looking for the girl and raided the home two hours later, police said.
Police found some 20 pounds of marijuana and a large growing operation that included indoor growing equipment, according to court records.
They also found a station inside the home where the duo is accused of trying to extract THC from the marijuana plants in order to make hash oil, a more potent form of THC, court records say. They also found already made hash oil, also called butane honey, in the home.
Akron police also found a station where ecstasy was being manufactured using phenyl-2-propanone chemicals and sassafras root.
Police also found multiple jars of psilocybin, a compound found in psychedelic mushrooms, court records say. Other items are being analyzed by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation's crime lab to determine their use.
Akron police also reported finding ledgers inside the home that spelled out the dollar amounts that suspected drug customers owed the duo.
Two others at the home face charges: Cody Russell, 22, of Akron and Samantha Nolan, 25, of Mantua. Russell is charged with occupying a drug house. Nolan is charged with illegally possessing chemicals used to make drugs, a third-degree felony.
Akron police caught Mullaney growing marijuana at the home in 2012. That incident began because a 28-year-old woman called police in pain. She said she had bite marks on her torso and didn't know how she suffered the injuries.
Medics alerted police that the home smelled like marijuana. Police went to the home and talked with Mullaney, who said he grew marijuana for his personal use.
Officers found two rooms in the home sealed off with plastic. They found 10 active marijuana plants, 17 other pots with dirt in them, and a box with several dead plants inside.
Mullaney eventually pleaded guilty in that case to a misdemeanor disorderly conduct and was fined.

Getting caught growing weed in your house, then staying the same house, and growing MORE weed, then attempting to manufacture chems? VERY dumb.

That would be 2 hours that they were not home and probably still had police outside, so even if they were they couldn't escape.

I knew these people involved and even I can say they were stupid and sloppy.
Do they deserve it? Hell no.

Those are 2 really odd ways of getting busted, I'm going to go out on a limb and say the cops made those reasons up knowing here was drugs in the house. That or those 2 guys are possibly the dumbest criminals I've ever read about. People that dumb probably wouldn't know how to convert safrole oil into PMK.

But if you read the article it appears only the female was home when the police showed up. At the risk of sounding sexist, females usually aren't the brightest when it comes to drugs or police in my experience. She probably didn't think the cops were going to bust down the door.
I'm not saying the guys were bright themselves or trying to justify their lack of action, but there isn't enough information for me to really condemn the guys since it doesn't appear they were home during any of this. It probably would have been stupider for them to show up with police on scene. This way they can enjoy their last bit of freedom for a while and consult legal counsel first.

Many of the best drug chemists we've read about getting busted on this site were great at the science shit, not so much the criminal shit.

I call bs on most of the charges. Your telling me they had a mdma lab? hah. A LSD lab... and were extracting resin? oh wait 10 plant I believe right? He got a misdemeanor. Charges are buffed up to get them to stick, sounds like the reporter doesnt understand manufacturing. He has a fresh supply of pkm oil or whatever? oh and psilicybin in jars, but not shrooms? wtf lol if he had more than just the plants your talking felonies, not a misdemeanor, idk who your lawyer is. there not dropping that shit if he had all that. just my 2 cents, but that article made me laugh with its shady details.

They're charged with third degree felonies, not misdemeanors. The jars were probably colonizing, hence no mushrooms. The mycelium could have psilocybin in it, but more likely either the girl told them what it was or they knew from past busts. Article doesn't say anything about an LSD lab, and MDMA has been produced by some real morons in the past, it isn't that unbelievable.

MDMA isn't that hard to make. Its not easy, but its not like you need to go to school to figure it out.

WTF?
http://fox8.com/2015/05/20/police-find-first-of-its-kind-drug-lab-in-akron-house-while-checking-of-4-year-olds-well-being/
Police find first-of-its-kind drug lab in Akron house while checking on girl’s well-being
AKRON, Ohio – A call to check on the well-being of a 4-year-old girl lead police to discover a unique drug operation, which they say is unlike anything that’s been seen before in Ohio.
Akron police dispatchers received a call from the sheriff’s office in Horry County, South Carolina concerned about a girl living in the house at Silvercrest Avenue.
Akron Police Lt. Brian Simcox said a Kenmore patrol officer was dispatched to the home, but Simcox was not far away so he responded as well.
“There was a strong odor of marijuana that you could smell in the driveway as you were walking up to the house so we spoke to her about that and she basically said get a search warrant if you want to come in, so we did,” Simcox said.
Once inside the house, Simcox said they discovered almost 80 marijuana plants and about 20 pounds of marijuana.
“We started to find chemicals that none of our meth lab people had ever seen before and that we weren’t familiar with and as we got deeper and deeper into it, we realized we did have a THC extraction lab,” Simcox said.
Simcox said the labs are used to extract and purify THC oil, also known as butane honey oil, from the marijuana plant to create an extremely potent concentration.
“The THC extraction labs, the butane honey oil labs, are very, very dangerous because of the butane that they use for the houses could explode and it creates a huge danger for kids because that’s a very low-lying, heavier-than-air gas that goes to the floor,” Simcox said.
But that was just the beginning.
“We started seeing rounded-bottom flasks with a red solid and a red liquid in it. We were a little concerned about that on a heating mantle. Then we started to see chemicals that we had heard of, but we really didn’t know what they were so we got out,” Simcox said.
Akron police called on a chemist from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation to try and help them identify the different chemicals.
“Honestly, we were thinking probably an ecstasy lab, an MDMA lab. Again it’s something that our BCI agents have trained our clandestine lab people on, but because we weren’t sure we called our regional BCI chemist and agent and asked him to come out,” Simcox said.
“As we were finding chemicals and our guys were in full (protective gear), you know, full air and everything because of the unknown dangers, we would bring it out and he would look at it and he would have contacts with other people from NES and BCI and his supervisors to figure out what kind of a lab we were dealing with,” he added.
Simcox said police also confiscated numerous electronic cigarettes with hash oil residue.
They found evidence of very potent phenyl-2-propanone and sassafras root bark, something Simcox said they have never seen here before. It’s used in the manufacture of ecstasy.
Also confiscated were jars of mold spores and psilocybin mushrooms, which are hallucinogens.
“At some point during the night, we were concerned about them making weapons or bombs here. We were one or two chemicals away from having all of the elements and chemicals needed to make explosives,” Simcox said.
“You’re starting to get into some of these exotic labs that many of us had never seen before, our BCI agent last night said that as far as he knows this type of lab would be the first one we have seen in the state,” he continued.
Officers who entered the house without protective gear were advised to go to a hospital to have themselves checked afterwards.
Simcox said investigators also confiscated ledger books that appear to show transactions.
Authorities arrested Samantha Nolan, 25, who claimed to have been house-sitting, and issued arrest warrants for Matthew Mullaney, 32, and Conor McCaffrey, 27.
Simcox said they face multiple felony charges that include illegal manufacturing of THC, Illegal manufacturing of ecstasy, possession of marijuana, illegal assembly of chemicals, possession of criminal tools and possession of hash oil.
Neighbors said there was a lot of traffic in and out of the house, but they never suspected anything like what investigators found.
The 4-year-old girl who had been staying at the house was not there when police arrived.
Mike Clifford said the girl frequently came to his house and the homes of other neighbors to visit and play.
“Having a kid in the house that’s bad, it concerns me. I have a 4-year- old boy here that was playing with the little girl,” Clifford said.
Investigators said they still have a lot of work to do to determine exactly what they found in the house and that the number of charges could grow.

Wow you thought the first article was all kinds of fucked up. And usually Ohio BCI are the smarter bunch in law enforcement.. They have all the chemists. Mols spores?
This also isn't the first MDMA lab in Ohio. I recall this one, which i don't really know if it was ever in operation, but I remember another from some years back I can't find an article on. http://www.cleveland.com/metro/index.ssf/2012/11/baldwin_wallace_university_stu.html
like I said before, some real morons have produced mdma / attempted to produce mdma
