[ID] Liberty Caps - New Zealand

Found these in grassy fields close to a beach and alot of animal droppings. Will post more info shortly, very limited time to post.
Most were very dry when found, dark chocolate gills with smooth cap. Some were slippery on the cap, most were not as they were very dry.

All that I can see are Psilocybe semilanceata. The problem with putting them in a pile like that before asking for an ID is that it is impossible to see what all of the mushrooms look like, so maybe make sure that you weed out any that are not correct, or post a picture with any individuals you have questions about(if there are any).

Fantastic.
Psilocybe semilanceata aka liberty caps.
i am going to echo ambc's comments about taking photos like that. makes it hard to be certain that each specimen is. go though and double check each specimen. remember there are some species that will look similar. some Panaeolus sp. look similar.
stunning collection though. you should feel pretty chuffed

Thank you for your comments Sorry for the bad photos, was in quite a rush at the time and my good camera has a flat battery, I'll take all that advice in.
I can't get any more photo's of them, but I can happily say that they were libs

Yeah they all look pretty good,
i have gone over your photos a couple of times, and they all look good to me.
im not sure how rare these are in New Zealand, and i wonder if it might be worth looking up herbarium records, and maybe worth depositing a few specimens from your collection with your local herbarium.
Its fantastic to be seeing more southerners finding these.

Libs aren't uncommon in in Southern NZ obtuse. The South island gets plenty.

really.
then that probably supports my theory that they are pretty common in Australia, just no-one is looking for them.

No one really look for them, I think. People have told me about them being here, members of the melbourne SAB crew, and I trust their word. I just haven't been out to the locations to have a look. Maybe we can go for a wander when you come to the mainland.

With all this Liberty Cap porn I am this close to jumping on a plane to Victoria... Although it does make me wonder about QLD pastures too.. Nice find! One day I will have to make it to NZ as well!

Holy shit that's amazing man, also interesting how you found them close to the sea as they tend inhabit higher altitudes in NZ and Aus. Did you find them on the peninsula by any chance?

Surprisingly, no they weren't on the peninsula. Very low altitude, we never expected to find them, we wen't out for subs and found them by mistake. The only bad thing to come from this was we saw a council working spraying the sub patches very sad to see. Fortunately, they can't spray the liberty caps(I assume) since it would kill all the grass(Please someone tell me this is right?)

I'd call your council and ask what they are spraying. Up here in Auckland its often glyphosate a.k.a Monsanto's cancer juice. Which would mean you should probably right that patch off indefinitely (or at least a long time). Some of the latest research (via: Blueing) http://www.enveurope.com/content/26/1/14

It's probably never going to happen, why spray a herbicide on a paddock of grass? I'm going to assume you are near about south Dunedin, so that's where I'm gonna look.
