New job.. Doubting I can do it.
    #21703458 - 05/20/15 06:29 PM (8 years, 8 months ago)

So today was my first day as a cashier at a local store. It's pretty easy, nothing really to it. Free soda and coffee whenever I want it.
I took it because it was 5 miles away from my home. Something to keep traveling down to a minimum until I find something better that pays more than minimum wage.

Unfortunately it requires 8 hours of standing and no real room to bend over to stretch. This wouldn't probably be an issue with most people but for some reason when I can't bend over or crack my back every few hours my lower back begins to ache to the point that I can't really concentrate on much of anything due to the pain.

When I first applied to this place they had bar stools for their workers so they could sit when no one was in the store. But they revoked that policy a few days before I started.

I am going to stay with them until I've found something better. I've done the math and I can afford a 60 mile daily trip and still get away with money in the bank each month. I just don't really know how I can do it, especially since I'll have a 6 day work week and 40-50 hours each week. I've done manual labor jobs and it wasn't as hard on my back like this.

I guess I'm looking for tips.

Don't go with that mindset. You can do it.

When I got promoted to supervisor after two months, I didn't think I could.
But I can. And I'm good at my job.

You can do this.

You'll get used to it. When I first started within a few hours my back and feet hurt like a mother fucker. After a couple of months it wasn't an issue any longer. If possible, in between customers put your elbows and forearms on the counter and lean on it, will take the stress off your back and feet.

I'll try some new shoes. I have a pair with some inlays that are nice and soft.

Maybe you should go to the doctor, get a note or something, and then ask nicely with the note.

Go to a new balance store and get a pair of inserts, I like the blue ones. I started using them when I worked as a cook standing all day. They actually provide support (moreso than even the best shoes) unlike those shitty dr shoells ones.

As far a stretching... you should be able to get away with it. Do a couple quick stretches when there's no customers nearby or in the store. If you smoke do em on your smoke break. If neither of those are an option say you have ibs or some shit and go to the bathroom every 2 hours and do em. And yeah it does get better after a week or two.

Most likely won't work. Retail doesn't give a shit about doctors or notes. Managers may bend the rules for a long term employee they like, but it's not gonna happen for someone new.

What the fuck do they lock you in a box that's exactly as big as you are standing? Doesn't sound like much of a convenience store. What do you sell a pack of gum?

I shake crab for 9-12 hours a day. Standing. In one spot. Don't walk around nothing. I lean over a table. At first it was brutal. Back and feet hurt. Hands hurt from hitting them repeatedly getting the meat out. 2 months and I walk out of there just fine. Can't even notice it. Maybe a little sore but as soon as I'm out in the open air of freedom who cares?

Sounds like OP needs to treat his back condition. OP, are you overweight? and have you had an mri? or have gone to Physical therapy? Workout?

Maybe you are weak, and fat, and have a slight disc bulge. Which could be fixed by getting skinny, and a little stronger, defying gravity at that point

I didn't think I could handle it either. Never done it. Sacked up. It's a job. And now I'm getting damn good at it and will be making 14+ an hour. 150 lbs of nothing but the good shit. Leg and body meat.

Sack up or don't work.

Well he listed one of the main reasons he took it was because they had a stool. To sit on when he isn't doing the ridiculously easy job of bagging items and making change. I dunno man I don't think that makes him fat just lazy.

No, but if he is contemplating quitting because he is standing then well.. it might be extremely painful, rather than just painful. I have stood for 8 hour days, walking around an what not. I have had leg surgeries, and have disc protrusions in my back, and it wasn't terrible. it was bad, but not enough to quit.

Probably just not used to it. I wasn't when I started. I got used to it eventually. Doesn't mean he or I was or are lazy. Average people don't make a habit of standing for 8 hours a day pretty much non-stop, except for working. It requires some getting used to.

I worked at a fast food restaraunt for a few weeks and the pain of standing lessened as I went on even in that short time. But now I'm at a country club and have adjusted to working on a torn ACL for a little over a month now, you'll get used to it

No if you read it it sucked. Now I feel spry and damn good as I just put in a hard days work with the opportunity to make more. And damn right. I've already doubled my output in a week. Another 33% increase to 8 30 lb totes will bring me to 14 an hour. Anything I do more than that is money in my pocket as Ill be making piece rate.

But I've done all kinds of cashier jobs it's incredibly unsatisfying. It's fun learning a skill that takes technique and speed.

I'm not used to it. All of my jobs had me moving around. This place, I just stand at a register all day long and occasionally get to walk out side for a break.

As for being fat and lazy. I hike every day with my dog and spend about 3-4 hours walking up and down trails. I'm a bit chunky at 220lb and I'm only 6'1, so losing some weight wouldn't hurt at all.

I didn't take the job because I would be sitting, though. I took it for the money. Also I have a second part time job that I work whenever I want for a slightly higher pay.
