Not taking to casing layer?
    #21702496 - 05/20/15 02:03 PM (8 years, 8 months ago)

For most of this months tubs I spawned to CvG + Pasturized straw with a top layer.

For maybe 6 tubs I got lazy and just mixed evenly with CVG, colonized quickly and I added a casing layer on all six.

I didnt put a date on when i cased but I would guess about a week, and no myc poking up through anywhere on any tubs.

I dont think i cased too deep, less than an inch Id say for sure

What gives? How deep do you folks case?

Yours truly,

      Mushpunx

What did you case with?

Consider 1" the maximum depth of casing, but 1/2" to 3/4" is probably better yet.  I rarely use over 1/2" of casing, even with deep substrates.

Other species of interest to people here require a thin substrate and casing layer.  For example, Pan cyans rarely fruit from a substrate over 1 1/2" thick.  If you're growing those, keep your manure layer thin, and apply a very thin casing layer, such as 1/4".

Its just coir/verm casing.

Thanks for the quote man! Maybe I did case a little on the deep side, probably closer to 3/4 inch so maybe theyre just taking a while

Thx!

My CVG casings are eaten up so fast that I fruit right when I case. I've never used that thick of a layer before though.

I usually do a "top layer" of CVG like that, just a real thin layer and yea it gets eaten up wicked fast too!

I think youre right man I think I might have cased a little deeper than I thought.. its hard to judge sometimes

It'll be fine. Mushrooms will still push through it. People bury contaminated substrates kinda deep and cover in fricken soil, and mushrooms will still poke through. I highly doubt you put too much for mushrooms not to poke through

It is hard to judge. I put a really thick top layer on a tub accidentally and after 3 weeks it was only here.

I fruited it anyways though :crazy2:

this straw tub went uncased for more than a month doing nothing, I put a quart of coir and verm on the top and less than a week later I see pins it's 3/8 thick or about.

Hmmm

Ok so I have 2 tubs left with no myc coming up thru the casing layer. Spawned on 7th, cased on 14th approx.

What do you folks think is going on??

Thank you
