Love of one's dog isn't so much about a romantic type of love as it is about a very subtle form of compassion.  I love on my dogs quite a bit, but enjoy them primarily for the compassion we share.

Truth is, my dogs know me better than my humans do -- and that is meaningful to me.

The beauty of the species is that they give you much of what's good about human relationships, without all the complications and setbacks.

Are you a dog person?  How do you feel about your relationship with your dog(s), or the species in general?

Dogs are great and cats alike just petting them makes you feel better.
Dogs give you their undivided attention without judging you, they are great self-esteem boosters. The attention they will give you cannot compare to any human relation.

Love 'em, love all animals a lot.  Always have been a dog person primarily, but now I'm a cat person too, and for the first time I have met a cat that likes to walk and run with me, alongside me, etc. . . very lovely.  Climb trees with me.  Etc.

I don't know that relationships with animals are always less than human ones - sometimes you are more giving with an animal like a cat; say you have a cat on your lap, you are both in a state of total peace and so forth, and you're petting her, well - that cat is in heaven, if you have a totally loving relationship there - and, as the human it's lovely, but you're not quite as enveloped in love as the cat is; however, it's a giving relationship, and it's a nice thing.. and it's also an uplifting thought to imagine what that would be like, to be totally embraced by love. . . to quote a Goethe line, "embraced and embracing" - talking about nature as a whole, and Spring in particular.

Oh, I don't think animal relationships are always less than human ones, at all.  I am not ashamed to say that I value the relationship I have with my dogs more than the majority of the ones I've had with various humans over time.  As they say, "dogs are people too."

Agreed. That comment also really touched home with me, because I've said that same thing, and that "animals are people too," several times since I was younger. . . partly just. . seemed to fit.

Cats purr's improve bone density, I just learned, and elephants can hear through their feet, and communicate over distances by making vibrations on the ground. . also can hear storms over 150 miles away.

some notes I found

'Cats purr during both inhalation and exhalation with a consistent pattern and frequency between 25 and 150 Hertz. Various investigators have shown that sound frequencies in this range can improve bone density and promote healing'

'The cat's purr is a healing mechanism and is a natural way to increase strength, and '

' lessening the chances of having a heart attack, and even strengthening bones.'

of course dogs have huge health benefits too, having them as best friends.. they were my first favorite of animals. . though i really love them all equally.

man. . . when i run out in the woods and fields with my dog, it's like. . ridiculous. . she knows exactly where i am all the time, can never get lost. . . and i watched some shows on dogs in africa. . when they hunt, they may be so many meters away from each other, yet all shift in formation at the same time. . blew me away. . and i noticed my lovely dog does that too. .

oh yeah and caracals are nice. type of cat.

a while ago i saw a coyote in the field, was running with 2 dogs, looked and saw it bounding across the field. . .

Pure Grace

Lovely.

am slightly confused about post deletion, sometimes they just vanish, other times they stay on a bit and linger.. my hypothesis it has to do with how often one chooses to do so. . .anyway, neither here nor there.

I can't tell if my dog actually loves me or it's all a con to get food and water.  Which ever it is having a dog is great, especially when it has practical RL applications.

Mark Rowlands wrote a great book called The Philosopher and The Wolf.
Couldn't recommend it more highly...

In it he makes the argument for interpreting philia as love of kin, which I found pretty impressionable.

they look like incredibly lovely dogs.. that's a wonderful thing about 'em, they run the whole gamut or spectrum of personalities, just like other animals.  By the way are coyotes dogs that have become wild again?

wow I got a cascade of high emotion when I read this

on Coydog:

'A coydog is a canid hybrid resulting from a mating between a coyote and a dog. The term is sometimes mistakenly used for coywolves, which are common in northeast North America, whereas true coydogs are only occasionally found in the wild.'

ok to answer my own question, nope, they actually diverged from grey wolves 1-2 million years ago, the current species forming in the middle Pleistocene.

yaay-o knowledge.

so i read most of the wiki article on coyotes; wonderful, wonderful stuff.

I wrote this today, didn't bring paper, sometimes they're better that way, am posting it to my journal but I wanted to share it here too DQ

I know this is philosophy and psychology not poetry, but poetry is in my mind and heart very intimately connected with all things in life.  It's the best way I can describe my dog.

I sit atop a deadwood bluff,
and see my doggie, glad enough
to catch the sticks I throw to her,
the sky above, a bold azure
and white flowers speckling the plain
herald of the coming rain.
It's much like childhood, much like times
of early days, and early climbs,
I'd set my young mind free to soar
and play within the wind's downpour;
The difference between now and then
Is not much, I still love the glen.
I rest against the tree, relax;
each tree of these a thousand shacks
with many rooms for us to roam,
we, who call such palaces home,
My dog, she waited patiently
as I climbed down from deadwood tree.
As she runs softly, each footfall
Leaves a print on sheltering earth,
Reflects, boundlessly, out her worth;
Each print eternal, however small.

Icelander is a dog person. *wonders what he is up to :strokebeard:

Don't know where he went or how long he'll be gone, but he always had wonderfully insightful things to say about dogs (among many other topics as well).  In his spirit, I'd like to share two quotes by Icelander that I tucked away:

"I've kept long term positive relationships with my dogs who are the best companions you could ask for except for the sex thing. They don't give a fuck if you're depressed and will wait it out with you.  They don't care if your brain is broke as long as you pay them some attention and go for long walks which btw is good for both of you.  Women usually want to be driven everywhere."

"I ended up bonding with dogs and finding them far superior in character to almost any homo primate."

I miss Ice.
