The Uk TIT temptation
    #21701979 - 05/20/15 11:00 AM (8 years, 8 months ago)

Dose anybody else find themselves being tempted to build a tit, only to be swayed not to by countless threads.

The Uk aint the hottest place on the planet, house temps around 17oC (and as low as 14oC in the winter,) causing frustration with slow colonisation. I mean even a small raise in temp to just below ideal would just be so much better.

TIT just seems beneficial as long as it is kept sterile and well maintained. It keeps jars away from those dusty shelves and tucked away cuddling each other in there nice cozy box.

Well if you absolutely want one. It just seems a little limited to me. Here in Canada it isn't exactly warm either but a little space heater does very well in the room i use. I'd rather heat the room so I can use the whole thing for colonization and fruiting rather than a small incubator.

Space heaters cost a bit to run all the time plus tryna keep this a bit stealth bomber. is there any other types of incubator that could be used?

I beg to differ. Since it isn't winter anymore, it just can drop in the mornings. I have my space heater on full blast to run for 30 minutes at 6 am. That'll bring it up to 80ish. It'll cool down until the afternoon when the room gets hit with sunlight due to it facing east. It'll get brought up again to 80ish. Only need it running for half an hour a day and I don't even have to be there lol

Adjust accordingly, I'm just saying for me it's like a 30 minute process a day. Pretty cheap too.

Insulating/plastic wrapping the windows will also help keep heat in if it's still a major concern

This may sound a bit crazy but we keep our grows in the bathroom.

It's surprising how warm it can get with the door closed and the towel rail/heater on.

Just be patient. Slightly low temps are less prone to contams and give fatter fruits.

I would be at similar room temperatures and find additional heat very beneficial. Is there a heater in your house, like a hot water cylinder? Around it will be too hot, but an attic may be above it. I have a wardrobe with a CFL light bulb, opened each day to let some new air in, jars can be covered or the bulb put on 12/12, or jars uncovered in a box 12/12 manually -but heating all the time. If using any form of heating mat it should be on top of a box containing your jars, and the box should be able to let air in and out -i.e. holes. Heating on top gives a far more controlled heat, as most heaters are far too powerful, also less condensation problems. If its still too hot some spacer can be used to move the heat mat up so less heat gets to the substrate.

You only need minimal power to heat a few jars above the current room temperature. A broadband modem could probably do it, or maybe a tv skybox or similar, which is rarely turned off, or could now be kept turned on to give heat. Some old phone chargers appear to warm up slightly if phones are plugged in or not, so they are just mini electric heaters, many people have these in a drawer somewhere. You could have several chargers in a ganglead socket extension, some are square shaped. If a breathable box of jars was on it then it would probably get within your desired range.

Another method I have used is a dimmer switch with a heating mat, giving it very lower power. I have had many aquarium heaters break and if you know basic electrics and safety you can easily wire up a broken/wet aquarium heater into a heating mat and have it switch on off to say 25-27C very easily. This could be an electric blanket or something else you might get some other use out of, besides growing. It could be connected to an electric fan heater of high power, these usually have a far wider tolerance, so could be 22-30C while controlling the same thing with the aquarium thermostat could be 25-27C, which may also shorten the life of it by more switching.

If it is really stealth you want look at growing sclerotia / stones -they make a lot of sense and I am surprised they are not far more popular.
