The fact is, they are a necessary labor resource. As it stands now, this country food supply depends on a reliable undocumented labor force. Crackdowns have demonstrated that American agriculture would be crippled without them.

This is a common argument.  It might even be true.  Of course we won't know unless Agribusiness starts paying at least minimum wage for the jobs that they hire migrants to do.  One thing is sure, americans are not going to pick berries for less than minimum wage.  The other problem with this, is that it assumes that migrants are too stupid to realize that they can walk across the road to Mickey D's and get a raise.  I assure you, they are not.

Dude we get it you hate wetbacks and alot might be stupid but so are you ... To work at that shit place mcdonalds you need papers the illegals cannot get a raise. No mericans will work in agriculture for minumun wage are you mad?

naaaaah you dont get it, his hate is justified and its not racism, or stupidity, or unfairness, its logic. because some other nutjob told him so while drinking a beer. and that makes it real pedro! that makes it REAL!

If we throw the illegals out the wages will rise to a high enough level to attract workers

The crab processing plant that I work at now just got cracked down on hard. Something like 150 illegals were working there under the same ssn. Why they pretty much hired anyone.

All I did to get the job was walk in and say I need a job. Orientations at 8. OK cool sounds good. No application, interview, nothin.

the fact is im not really just busting your balls for coming into a comment without preparing to back up your claim, its a crappy claim in general.

there are 10m illegal workers best guess. theres roughly 120 million legal workers. its not going to make a radical impact as you suggest. (would imply roughly 80 million of the ages to work that cant work or dont have work) which makes the reported 90 million by qman a bit questionable. but im not sure.

either way 10 million new jobs, and 10 million higher paid jobs, isnt going to make the dramatic impact you think it is.

the reason people in construction get paid like mexicans, is because society thinks of people in construction exactly LIKE They think of mexicans.

i have a positive opinion of both, shrug.

It doesn't work in practice. What actually happens, is the produce is left in the field to rot because they can't attract workers at wages low enough to still make a profit on the product. Food production is very labor intensive and even small increases in labor costs have strong impact on inflation.

@rxb. Where are these 10 million new jobs coming from? Deportation would reduce the labor force by 10 million. No jobs are being created. In fact, jobs will certainly be lost... Reducing the population of the country by ten million significantly shrinks the size of the economy.

@koods

they are an assumption i'm willing to concede.

i think the truth is in the middle, some food would not get planted or harvested, some WOULD but would demand a higher price because it cost more to harvest. other people would learn to automate harvest (reducing the job market)

That's funny. None of the food on my farm gets left to rot and I have no trouble hiring legal American citizens with good paying wages for seasonal work. What's even funnier is I am still able to undercut the competition.

Outside of tobacco farms there's actually very little non-US citizens working agriculture in Ohio. Even tobacco still has mostly American citizens working for it.

Why do you make stuff up about agriculture when you have no idea about it koods?

In fact I bet you didn't know it, but there is actually a whole industry where people will pay YOU to pick crops off your land. Take a drive to your local blueberry, strawberry or tomato farm and check it out. Soccer moms love to pick blueberries for their family at an affordable cost.

i've often wondered if u-pick farms end up wasting a lot. but im sure you get more per pound than you do wholesaling.

dmt pm me about how you find people to sell your crops to in any given area.

i know how it works with tobacco ... i grew up around it. no idea how it works with fruit.

It's cheaper to pay minorities than preform daily repairs on a robot.

Not to mention the electricity / fuel the robot is running off.

Craigslist, or out of the back of a pickup truck on the side of the road.

Are you from the states? That's what everyone does.

no, im pretty sure most people dont sell their oranges to tropacana out the back of their pick up.

you do that with what you can, the left over goes to market.

with tobacco, they go to your local warehouse and then people come and bid on it, but with fruit that would kind of fuck it up, it would rott while waiting for bids.

you think all that fruit and veg in your store came from the back of pickup trucks off craigslist?

No but I bet you make WAY more money out the back of a truck then selling to a grocery store.

yes and no.

what you can sell locally... yes, but then you have a field left over.

i know girls that would sell corn out of the field, and make money, and their dads would go to market with it, i just never knew how that end of it worked. with tobacco i knew people close enough that i've planted, and pulled, and dried and gone to the auctions.

and with CORN it may work just like that corn/onions/potatos will last a long damned time.

fruit only lasts for so long.... tomatoes only last so long, so i wonder how those work in quantity.

I have contracts with food co-ops, local grocery markets and fancy high-end restaurants that love to throw the 'all organic' tagline on their products - depends on the product harvests range from April to November. Not sure what they do out of season, probably freeze or can shit for the winter. Never have leftovers, expansion is imminent . At the moment 75% of my diet comes from my farm already.

Tobacco is typically auctioned alongside corn, soybean and wheat. I used to have a small tobacco base in the 90s but the government started paying me to get rid of it. So now it's just fields of soybeans I grow there. Did grow a field of corn in 2013 - I don't typically grow corn, it would depend on the market for that year and if the season will let it plant early enough. After 2012's boom, there's been record yields and lowering price.

Last year the local farmers were leaving corn out until after it snowed to save drying costs. Others lost out not getting to harvest until near Christmas.
