Good or Bad to Pack the monotub down?
    #21701797 - 05/20/15 09:52 AM (8 years, 8 months ago)

I pasturized 6.5 jars of substrate, and had 3 jars of GT spawn.  I figured, 9.5 was the magic number of quarts cuz i filled my tub to the line with water before to see how many quarts it took to fill.

By the time I was done adding in 3 jars of spawn and 4 jars of substrate, I was up to my line, I must've just rlly packed the jars tight with sub. So I /shrugged and added another 1.5 quarts of pasturized substrate, mixed it all up very well, then I packed it down to my line.

The question is

Is a packed down substrate any better or worse than a loose substrate? Less room to breathe? Easier to colonize? What's your experience?

Packed subs are harder for the mycelium to colonize. You want to leave it loose an airy.

This is what I was afraid of. No worries, I'll just go bang my monotub around abit n vibrate the sub apart abit. I just threw the tub together this morning.

Yeah just mix it up, and level it off lightly.  If its over your holes just remove some sub.

I'm currently using a 70qt tub. With 1 650g coir brick, 2qt verm, hand full of gyp, 5 qt of water and 6 jars of spawn 2/3 full at a 4" sub depth and it puts me right below my holes using everything.

Pure straw substrates need packed down because straw is just airy anyway. Everything dirt-like needs to be airy. Saphrophytic fungi are aerobic.

These are the TEKs I use. They're all as cheap and easy as possible, just like your mom.
