morel mycelium and contamination
    #21701357 - 05/20/15 07:07 AM (8 years, 8 months ago)

Hello everyone
so a week ago I transferred a small piece of white Morel mycelium
from outdoors to my prepaired rye grass seed/soil jar. I look yesterday to find nice white growth. The very next day/this morning I see what I deleive is sclerotia. I turn the jar slightly and see a small patch of green which I figure is contamination. But there are patches of what I think is sclerotia forming very densley around this contamination And they are forming other places with no sign of contamination. Is the Morel trying to fight of this green junk. Any info or personal experience with something like this out there that wants to share, I would love to hear from you.

You just dropped a tissue sample into rye without making sure the culture was clean on agar first? I don't know if the morel mycelium will be able to fight off the contam. It would probably be best to start over. Clone a fruit to agar and verify clean growth next time. Morels are some of the most difficult mushrooms to clone. Because they are so thin and hollow it is very hard to get a clean inner tissue sample, and dropping a tissue sample from one into sterilized rye is super risky.
