Yeah, that log is almost done.  The other side of the log, where the 2 longer stemmed ones are, there were spent clusters lining the bottom edge.  Was a little bit of a bummer to not get to them in time, but on the other hand it's nice to see clusters doing their thing and sporing up the area.

Ps how can you tell if mulch is hardwood? Mine just said premium brown mulch on the bag

Hold a piece in your hand and try to stick you thumb nail in to it. If it's hard wood, your nail will have trouble Peirceing the surface.Use a known peice for refrence and to fermiliarize your self with the texture and feeling.

I dont think it matters if there is a little bit of aged pine in the mix.  I threw a good bit of pine  and cedar chips in my patch and it doesnt mind eating it and even fruited. Unless its purely resinous wood and fresh dripping with sap.  I bet "hardwood" mulch sold at stores gets the occasional softwood thrown in the mix.

So you just chop up an ovoid and its mycelium and throw it in a bag of shredded hardwood mulch? Or is their a quicker way to do it via agar?

put you stem butts and old rotted extras in your mulch and average two years to fruit.

Got some cube cakes going too, so I'll be good for the year lol. Anybody have experience growing ovoids on cakes? I plan on trying.

Bagged shredded mulch probably has had enough contact with soil to fruit.  You could do mini flower pots outside with enough bricks to control temp swings, and I bet theyd fruit in a fruiting chamber.  Might be a good route to for outdoors as youll sooner know what your strains are capable of without the 2 year wait.

Cakes arent much good for ovoids IMO.  Not enough air or something.

I was thinking of using the chunky verm and substituting some of the BRF with sawdust. Maybe eveven putting the jars in the fridge for 24 hours before birthing and dunking them in ice water. I heard they were fast colonizers but idk.

Greeting all, well I managed a couple hours in the field today. I ran into a couple of old timers who had such interesting stories....Firstly, they called these "Happy Jacks", this is my first time hearing this in all my years. Then they told me a story I have heard before, it's not true, but seems to be mushie folklore of my area...the story goes that these are here from the Black Forest in Germany, and that they arrived here because of German settlers who were cattle farmers bringing the spores on grain, and that is how they arrived in the Mid Ohio Valley. Now we know this isn't true because they have been here much, much longer, but hey, I wasn't going to correct them, they were a hoot to talk to. I spent a good 45 minutes chatting it up with them, good times....
Anyhow, onto the pics....

That's the haul from about 1 1/2 hours, spent too much time chatting with the old guys..lol. (Shit, i'm an old guy, respectively). Lots of pins still, but it's getting really dry again. I should note I normally don't take pins or stem butts, but I need some for colonization.
Hope this finds you all well!
A.

I don't know how you guys do it. I don't have health insurance and I seem to be better at finding these guys than the ovoids they've been guarding.

That's nowhere near as dangerous as the ticks.

Chiming in with today's finds.  It started out a little slow, but we lucked out and found this new area full of clusters.  It was basically a buried mulch pile about 15' x 8' right up on the embankment of a creek.  A lot of specimens were fresh but dark.  I'm guessing from pinning and then stalling when the rain was slack, and then growing again with these last storms.  The exposed logs still aren't taking off yet, mostly just the buried stuff.  It's way easier to locate those clusters than sweeping the grass back and forth just to catch a glimpse of one.  Although I do like the stems on the grass ovoids, because they try to reach above it and give themselves a nice sturdy long stem.  Well anyhow, here's some of the stuff I saw today.

I don't mind the ticks. I get naked as soon as possible after all hunts and catch them before they bite. Those copperheads on the other hand are dangerous little fuckers. They don't move when you are near them, they just rely on their camouflage and try to blend in. If you don't see them and you step on one, you're going to the hospital.

Looks like a Friday hunt is in store. Another 4 hours of driving to scope out new territories, new possibilities, new adventures.

Should bring a better camera this time. Hope I find some.

I've scoped.  I've searched.  I've pulled over a hundred ticks of me.  I didn't even think about poisonous snakes until today. I've spent tanks of gas.  I started locally now I'm driving an hour each way.  I'm on the coast so I can't go east, but south, north, and west are done.  I've tried woods, parks, searching mulch beds. 1 foot of knotweed to 8 feet tall. Nettle, ivy, streams, creeks, rivers.  I'm at a loss. You guys say nj is in, well I'm stumped and the season is almost over.  Why did I have to move to jersey from wpa? Congrats to all those that found some. They all look amazing.

Hey guys. I have been a bit busy with my girlfriend visiting, but not too busy for a couple of harvests. I didn't take many pictures, as I didn't want to linger too much with my lady there too. Anyways, my season is finally picking up the way it should. Here is my latest haul, plus probably even more than that left there to mature a bit:

Not a super haul, but nice considering they were all in a ~50ft area. I was out of there in 30 minutes .

It's the lack of rain we've had. Go out tomorrow or today if this lets up and see the increase in finds, active or not.
Ovoid season is most certainly not close to being over.
