Anyone here use(d) a straight razor to shave? I just ordered one plus accessories and I think it will be a big step up from an electric razor.

I consider myself too clumsy for a straight razor, I use a safety razor (double edged blades, an iKon OSS or a Merkur 34C + Derby Extra blades)
Have you got a strop and everything?
I sometimes have nerve shocks, my arms spasming a sudden jolt, so a straigfht razor is not advisable to me.
Tell us what gear you have. Is it a DOVO razor?

I haven't but I was just talking about this in a different thread recently and I'm really looking forward to getting a straight razor shave next time I go to the barber.
I've been cutting/trimming/shaving my own hair and beard for over 10 years now so I'm a bit nervous, don't know what to expect from a barber since it's been so long. Also doesn't help I watched Sweeny Todd not too long ago, lol.

I ordered a strop and brush to go with the razor. I didn't get a soap bowl yet because a glass bowl will do me fine until I get a job this summer. I ordered a Gold Dollar carbon steel straight razor that should come professionally honed. While they can't beat DOVO for quality, their razors are supposed to be pretty good and usable as long as they are honed like any carbon steel straight razor must be. I'll strop it before every use to keep it sharp, dry it after every use, and I'll be ordering a high grit whet stone this summer as well for it. That should be everything I need for the first few months. Sucks that you have nerve shocks, my hands are a little shaky, but when holding them even very gently against something they are very steady. I'm still afraid that something could startle me when I'm shaving my neck though, . I've heard good things about those razors too, but I prefer the most dead simple of tools.
I'm definitely practising on my arms and legs before my face and neck . Anyways, the main reason I'm getting it is because my electric razor doesn't cut short hairs, and the last time I used a regular razor (I was like 12) I didn't like how it felt in my hand, not enough control over the blades. So after some research I went with the straight razor.

A straight razor is an excellent choice and you'll be learning a true art, not just in wielding the blade but also in its maintenance.
If wielded expertly a straight razor is a single pass wonder: one pass can get you BBS whereas my iKon OSS needs 2 passes for that and my Merkur 34C 3 passes.
I admire your ambition, study up well!

I've been too scared to drop the money on a straight razor I hear there is a steep learning curve AND your face needs to get used to it
but I have moved away from canned shaving cream and hope to get into safety razors soon

I went back to disposables because I need to have it rehoned and just haven't felt like sending it off.
Have to be careful and pay attention to what you're doing. You don't just cut yourself by moving it laterally, also happens by putting too much pressure or holding the blade at the wrong angle. They are extremely sharp. I never really knew just how sharp. You get it expecting it to be sharp like a box cutter or exacto knife, and those things are fucking butter knives in comparison.
It's fun to use though, makes shaving actually enjoyable, not just a mundane task to keep your face from itching.
Hopefully you didn't order an expensive strop, because you're going to nick the shit out of it at first. You can use sand paper to smooth them out.

You gotta do that shit just right in order to avoid some cuts. I just haven't mastered it yet. I will.
You're right, it's like the sharpest blade on earth. I accidentally touched it a little too hard with my finger the last time I shaved, and cut myself.

Yeah when I got it and saw (or felt more accurately) just how sharp it was, I started to get nervous using it. My wife sat in the bathroom my first time in case she needed to call 911.. lol.
Cuts for me happen most at the side burn trimming. Shaving the left side of my face is awkward as hell. I can't use my left hand for anything, I'm the exact opposite of ambidextrous. Takes me like 20 or 30 seconds just to line up for a single pass on my right side.
Other than the awkward positioning to pull the skin tight AND be able to see what you're doing in the mirror, I was surprised by how natural it felt to use one though. I'm guessing their design is no accident.
Actually I can't remember which side is awkward it's been so long.. I know I have real difficulty with one side. I think it's the left because then my hand is blocking my view and I can't see what I'm doing so trying to maintain visibility and hold the razor correctly becomes difficult.

Yeah my biggest problem is I just winged it for awhile. Just decided I wanted a straight razor, the gf got me one, and I went to shaving. Zero research.
I've since watched some videos, and know I was doing it all wrong.

I got a 12 dollar strop to go with my razor lol. They're definitely super sharp, in fact they're as sharp as a metal blade can get, the only blades of any kind that are sharper are all some sort of ceramic or glassy materials.
They're also very ergonomic looking, with your fingers being only a fraction of an inch from the blade. Although I haven't used one yet, it looks like you get a lot of control over the blade..

I received it a few days ago and shaved my face, I only got one cut. and it was on my finger
Now my entire body is smooth and I am in love with this razor! I did get a couple nicks (3) on my arms, and 1 on my legs though. The cuts are so thin when you get one that they don't even always bleed. The hardest part is shaving where you can't see, like when shaving your back.
