half colinized cake casing Q

i did a little experiment. i tried to use more brf and less verm. same amount of water. these cakes are really hard. not enough water i think and they have been colinizign for about a month now. ome are around half or a third colinized.

anyway heres my Q. what is a tek i coudl use for half colinized cakes? i dotn really want to inject water. but i was thinkign maybe a peatmoss casing. any ideas or suggestions would be cool.

yeah you could case them with peat or coco coir and verm mix. I would cut away the uncolonized parts of the cake though.

so will teh peat give enough nutrients to produce some fruits? and the colinized parts are really rock hard.

dunk the cakes before you case them, that should restore the moisture content, peat will retain water not provide nutrients, they should be okay though, I don't see why they wouldn't fruit unless the mycellium is dead :frown:

you don't seem to be listening. adding peat will not be adding nutrients [not much, anyway]. this is the reason people use peat as a casing material/constituent, and not as a substrate. the only serious risk of contamination with peat is that it might be improperly prepared or the PH not raised sufficiently to deter bacterial growth. bacteria prefer acidic media, while the mycellia of P. cubenisi prefers a neutral to slightly alkaline media.

sorry mayeb i was unclear. i understand peat wont add nutrients. but i was wounderign abotu soil. i thoguth shroomwizard had a tek for half colinized cakes adn used soil.

Do you want to case with soil, containing decaying plant matter and microorganisms, or sterile, inter peat moss? I say both are alright.

I case w/ peat moss and verm, and have tried straight both and I don't observe a significant difference.

soil outside is common and accepted. Inside could work too, if you pasteurize it, Try it and see.
