I want to add gypsum to rye grain . Can I simply use calcium hemihydrate, instead of Calcium sulfate?

Just do it the proper way, is it really worth fucking your mushrooms for $7-8? Calcium carbonate is for drying your shrooms

I think Calcium carbonate is not the same as calcium hemihydrate, or am I wrong?

I've used plaster of paris successfully in place of gypsum.
"The hemihydrate (CaSO4·~0.5H2O or (CaSO4)2·H2O) is better known as plaster of Paris, while the dihydrate (CaSO4·2H2O) occurs naturally as gypsum." - Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calcium_sulfate

Thanks. So I will soak grains 24 hours. Then replace water and wash the grains again. Then boil. then PC. Should I add it before before soaking or before boiling? How much to add?

What tek are you following? What grain are you using? That sounds like a lot of extra work and depending on the grain you are using boiling is risky. 24 hours is a long soak time as well, 12-18 is better IMO.

I use rye grain. Most teks I found recommend boiling, so that grain has the right amount of water. for example http://www.shroomery.org/8432/From-syringe-to-print-using-rye So you say I can simply soak the grains for 16 hours, then drain and put in jars, and PC?

You can boil some grains but certain grains like millet will explode real easy. So boiling can be tricky. With a grain like rye I would soak for 12-18 hours, then simmer and strain. The heat from the simmer will ensure no excess water. Do not rinse the grain after simmering, you want it hot.
That tek is ancient. While it will work there are better ways to do things today. Things like incubators and layering bulk are usually counterproductive in most situations. I suggest reading more current teks.

I have added both coffee, and calcium hemihydrate. Must admit that colonization has never been quicker. I didn't check if grains stick more or less. It is no important for me, since I don't shake them anyway, but leave them as is, and when casing, I remove the grains with a spoon. I actually think they do stick, and it didn't help in this aspect.
