I do agree but there are many ways of earning dignity.

Depends what you do for "work"

I never felt dignity in washing dishes at a restaurant.

HA, I used to wash dishes in a restaurant too. I have never really minded monotonous jobs though. Somebody's gotta do it. I think dignity is part of a person's character though, in which case: If a person's work build's their character, then I suppose it builds their dignity too.

Depends on the man i suppose. And also where he finds dignity, from others or himself?
I have seen many friend up on high horses upon new employment, only months later they tire of the monotany and complain about their once loved jobs.

Pride and dignity same thing, only differance is that pride sometimes overlaps and wins.

Like dignity is lost when a man loses his job, because he is used to meeting public standards of dress. Therefore dignity is a learned behavior that we become used to after years of work; so yes I agree that a man earns his dignity thru his work.

I think this is a pretty good point.  I agree, and therefore disagree.  I would say that one man could earn dignity through his work, while another may not.  I'm always leery of defining someone by how they make their money.  Most of the time, I feel the correlation is somewhat spurious.

Totally disagree. Dignity comes up when he/she cares about the other human being, animals and our planet.

Work has nothing to do with this, so a person who is disable wouldnt be one by default?

How does work have nothing to do with caring for people or the planet? What about doctors, paramedics, conservationists, etc.?

I am talking in overall terms but we can list tons of jobs where people are priority unlike bankers and others job related to capitalism/exploitation.

To me dignity is a loaded term because it usually indicates the idea of self-respect within a certain circumstance - demonstrating one's self-respect socially, in how one acts and reacts to certain social situations.

And, for me at least, I think the idea that expressing one's self-respect to others has a pretty dubious underlying motivation. How often does one find oneself at the foot of a bridge, a giant troll standing before you, arms crossed and insisting that you shall not pass unless you prove you have self-respect.
Okay, so there was this one time... :smirk:

Anyways, I think self-respect is something self-generated, strictly for oneself, by oneself. To actually respect each and every aspect of your entire being is a wonderful gift to offer oneself.

Activity, work, art — three words which mean precisely the same thing, are definitely cornerstones of generating self-respect, since taking action is an integral and obligatory aspect of living a life.

Self-respect itself simply emanates in one's actions, in one's behavior, in one's emotional and perceptual experience of reality. Displaying one's dignity, I think, is to do unto oneself a great indignity.

As June approaches, it will be 2 years since I lost my position as TRUST Specialist (crisis intervention, individual/group/family/substance abuse counselor) in the nation's 4th largest school system. I enjoyed my position for 27 years before funding was dropped, and I could either become a middle school science teacher for the first time at age 60 in an inner-city school or resign. I resigned. I had the unique opportunity to practice Compassion for a living, and so my job was a form of secular ministry which satisfied the bodhisattva-nature in me.

Purpose or meaning has both vertical and horizontal aspects. The vertical is a matter between you and God (Pure Being). The horizontal domain has to do with relating to other sentient beings. I must admit that I have often felt lost in terms of purpose since retirement began. For the first few months I was in a blind panic to find new employment, but I discovered ageism, and nobody contacted me on numerous search engines. I had 30 years of experience and a Ph.D., and companies wanted to pay for a Masters level applicant in my field with 2 years of experience - clearly not a 60 year old. I realized that we could live on my pension without drawing on my 403(B) or investment portfolio (so far). So, now I am back to a primarily vertical relationship as I was when I was still a philosophy undergrad or a seminarian, before the rigors of grad school and career-building.

I do not think it so much a matter of dignity as purpose. As for pride, that is the #1 'cardinal sin' in Catholicism. I have never been prideful, whereas I can be confident in areas of experience and expertise, I have never thought of myself as "the shit," "the bee's knees," "the cat's meow," or any other saying that says I am "all that." I am more aware of those who far exceed me in spiritual matters as well as in financial success than those who are less blessed, and that awareness has always kept me relatively humble. It was humbling to lose the job I enjoyed, but it would've killed me, literally, to assume the level of stress that such a radical demotion would've caused. My dignity is a function of my personal integrity, my honesty, my intentionality to do good here on The Shroomery no less than in a professional and paid capacity.

As was the thrust of my "personal worth" thread, I think this is the most appropriate comment one can make.

A man earns his dignity in not hitting his wife after she has negatively nit picked him down to a scrawny nub of his formal self over decades.  Or not?

I lived with a very sick and toxic wife for 13 out of my then 39 years - 1/3 of my life. She did cause damage as I developed Dependent Personality Disorder as a dysfunctional defense against her Alcoholic, Borderline, Sadistic and Antisocial characteristics. But even when I discovered the depth of her deception, dishonesty and infidelity, I never became violent towards her. That was not due to dignity, that was due to survival-motives against not being arrested and jailed for domestic violence and possibly being convicted of a felony, thereby ruining my professional life and livelihood.

"Perhaps it is time the 'work ethic' was redefined and its idea reclaimed from the banal men who invoke it."
- Studs Terkel

"The United States desperately needs a public discussion that challenges the prevailing belief that a person's worth and social contribution can and should be measured primarily (or exclusively) by his or her income from paid work."
- Katherine McFate

"There is more for us in life than the nine to five work ethic and a life of clocks, finances, and shallow living."
- Tom Brown Jr.

"I would like to see people refusing to work in any job they felt was wrong. I would like to see work-dodgers: honourable and brave people who refuse to continue to feed this monstrous culture."
- Chris Busby

Disagree. We all lose our ability to work as we age and retire. It doesn't mean we all lose our dignity.
