A man earns his dignity in not hitting his wife after she has negatively nit picked him down to a scrawny nub of his formal self over decades. Or not?

I lived with a very sick and toxic wife for 13 out of my then 39 years - 1/3 of my life. She did cause damage as I developed Dependent Personality Disorder as a dysfunctional defense against her Alcoholic, Borderline, Sadistic and Antisocial characteristics. But even when I discovered the depth of her deception, dishonesty and infidelity, I never became violent towards her. That was not due to dignity, that was due to survival-motives against not being arrested and jailed for domestic violence and possibly being convicted of a felony, thereby ruining my professional life and livelihood.

Disagree. We all lose our ability to work as we age and retire. It doesn't mean we all lose our dignity.
