A man earns his dignity in not hitting his wife after she has negatively nit picked him down to a scrawny nub of his formal self over decades.  Or not?

I lived with a very sick and toxic wife for 13 out of my then 39 years - 1/3 of my life. She did cause damage as I developed Dependent Personality Disorder as a dysfunctional defense against her Alcoholic, Borderline, Sadistic and Antisocial characteristics. But even when I discovered the depth of her deception, dishonesty and infidelity, I never became violent towards her. That was not due to dignity, that was due to survival-motives against not being arrested and jailed for domestic violence and possibly being convicted of a felony, thereby ruining my professional life and livelihood.

"Perhaps it is time the 'work ethic' was redefined and its idea reclaimed from the banal men who invoke it."
- Studs Terkel

"The United States desperately needs a public discussion that challenges the prevailing belief that a person's worth and social contribution can and should be measured primarily (or exclusively) by his or her income from paid work."
- Katherine McFate

"There is more for us in life than the nine to five work ethic and a life of clocks, finances, and shallow living."
- Tom Brown Jr.

"I would like to see people refusing to work in any job they felt was wrong. I would like to see work-dodgers: honourable and brave people who refuse to continue to feed this monstrous culture."
- Chris Busby

Disagree. We all lose our ability to work as we age and retire. It doesn't mean we all lose our dignity.
