Cactus Seedling Root Growth

Hi I have a problem with a baby cacti seedling. Considering only 5 out of 20 germinated I am hoping that maybe I can save it.....the root of the 3 week old baby is growing across a small piece of a flat looking rock. It is growing diagonally because it is not in the ground....I was wondering if maybe I could try and move it off without damaging the cacti? Maybe carefully plant the rock into the soil so the root can spread out and actually grow into the vermiculite? I will post pics later...

This happened with a lot of mine when they first germinated.
Not a problem at all. As you said, simply "plant the rock into the soil". Just be gentle, but they're typically pretty tolerant to handling.

Leave it. Only the strong survive.

Or graft. Sorry. I should have said that before.

Lol - TOUGH LOVE!

Soil grown seedling is the only way other than grafting but I like cacti on their own roots and just aren't strong enough to make it in this world "natural selection".

I'll third that notion. You can still put some extra soil on top of it though. Next time, don't put rocks in your seedling germination tray, I learned a similar lesson with perlite.

He only had 5 germinate, sounds like he's wanting to save it with little risk. Which is 100% doable.
If that's the case shaka. Trying to put it down into the soil some more, is the best way to go. I've done it more times than I can remember.
Trying to graft it would be a lot riskier than just covering it with a bit of soil. It's a hit or miss, especially if you've never done it.

Well I pushed the little guy a little further down into the medium and covered that rock his root was growing across..you can tell which one he is by how diagnonal he is but its better than how he was growing before. Hopefully he just kind of moves past the rock haha.

They guy in the back was having trouble

The other two

In a couple weeks I think I'm going to order more plus some peruvians (which are hopefully peruvians) and try germinating in grit alone without any soil...would rather not risk killing any seedlings with mold like what might have happened to this batch.
