Has the price of food gone up in your area lately??
    #21697480 - 05/19/15 08:02 AM (8 years, 8 months ago)

Summer is here, so that means grilling season. Steaks on the BBQ!!!

I get to the grocery store and realize that I can't get a decent piece of meat for under 7$.... I'm like WTF... 7$ MINIMUM for something decent... A big T-bone, 12$....

I don't nw wtt ealyp haened in the farming industry to justify these insane prices but I want to know if it's just me or have you guys noticed a sharp increase in the price of your groceries.

mmwell?

Food prices might really skyrocket since california is running out of water. A lot of food is grown there then shipped around, plus 38 million people live there. I'm thinking if I want tomatoes I better start growing them my self, there gonna be like 10 dollars per pound.

I've noticed that with rotisserie chickens compared to prepackaged raw chicken, cuts..  I think the processing and grouping of specific cuts has to do with the paired cuts costing more than the 'one shot' whole bird

I remember as a kid which wasn't too long ago, we could afford to eat steak least once a week. Now I haven't ate any for years pretty much. Too expensive.

porkchop on sale $1.00 a lb ,, bought 30lbs..

usually buy the 5lb packs of chicken breast. when they are on sale. I dont buy bone chicken. not paying for something I cant eat. and it cost more..

dont really buy beef.

I can spend $100.00 at a sushi bar, and can make the same thing at home for 1/3 of that.

Also CAD is worthless right now because of oil, so that may have to do with it.

Theyre cheaper because they use the old chicken thats about to go bad neway. Its one of the many factors that makes preprepared super market rotissere chickens fucking disgusting.  cuts of anything are more expensive because you have to cut them which means time money and waste.

That California comment. I read about that in the papers. Apparently avocadoes require a ridiculous amount of water to grow and because of the drought they are gonna get ridiculously expensive.

Yes. Maybe 2 or 3 years ago a premium sirloin steak was roughly that price. And I'm talking a slab of meat. Then again, we got cattle country Alberta to supply the demand at will, so it keeps the prices down (or used too anyway)

It's at 80 cent per USD. Which is what we would call "back to normal exchange rates". The way it should have beeen for the last 10 years.

I hear you, some of those roasts get choice with the bone in.  My grandma taught me that, she comes from a different time, the depression.  But she's right.  There's things you can use bones for, I come from an old school mentality that being the youngin, I still stand back and, man, they really had it all figured out.  Their life, was really in gamble.  Your poorest countries often have the best tricks for that "shiny light, secret recipe" ..  you know what Im saying..

I worked breifly in a grocery store back when I was 18. I saw how they prepared that rotisserie chicken. I am never eating that shit ever... It kinda made me feel weird too because the health inspectors come frequently and apprently that way of making the rotesserie chicken fall within the requirements of the law... So if that's legal, I don't want to know what's going on in any kitchen of any restaurant ever...

Really I'm talking about the super market rotisserie chickens. You no the ones they marinate in slop over night and then the janitor comes in to open up at 6am and throws them on so at 6pm you can have a roast ball of slimy chicken meat! Yeh every one of them I've ever ate was disgusting.

Everything has gotten more expensive the past 5 years while income has stayed the same.

It is a good thing I live in fruit country, that stuff is still dirt cheap where I live. For one euro you get 1,5 kilo (good) appels!

It's doing perfectly. I would prefer 75 cents on the USD. It's much better for us. When it's at par or higher, our industry struggles.

I don't know why everybody thinks thats the goal of a currency is to be worth more and more. There's a reason why some currency are lower and higher than others. The CAD is supposed to be 75 cnts on the USD.

I'm not traveling.

Plus there's a hell of a lot more money on the line in the industrial sector than the traveling sector. The only countries where I'll spend my money is in the other G7 countries. In the order of importance: 1) USA 2) UK australia 3) Germany,France 4) Japan Italy

CAD/USD

Its as low as it was in 2009, during a serious recession. CAD is not doing well eh?

It's doing perfectly. I would prefer 75 cents on the USD. It's much better for us. When it's at par or higher, our industry struggles.

I don't know why everybody thinks thats the goal of a currency is to be worth more and more. There's a reason why some currency are lower and higher than others. The CAD is supposed to be 75 cnts on the USD.

It doesnt help when buying meat though Patlal.

Our meat comes from canada. The price of the dollar doesn't affect it.

Thats not necessarily true. A weaker currency can cause inflation even in domestic products.

Yeah, Texas has more impact on you guys than us. Our cowboys out west seem to be struggling with something

I get to the grocery store and realize that I can't get a decent piece of meat for under 7$.... I'm like WTF... 7$ MINIMUM for something decent... A big T-bone, 12$....

I don't nw wtt ealyp haened in the farming industry to justify these insane prices but I want to know if it's just me or have you guys noticed a sharp increase in the price of your groceries.

mmwell?

Oh please. Chicken is going up in price because of an outbreak of avian flu (yes, they get flu too) and the have to be destroyed. Eggs are going up in price too and I'm sure you can guess why. But hey, if you want to eat diseased chicken, be my guest.

Strange. Chicken still is decently priced here.

I just bought eggs today for 1.88$ per dozen

It probably hasn't gotten up there up. And maybe your food setup is different. Here, we have huge "factory farms" where chickens are raised by the millions in tiny cramped cages. When something like this hits, it spreads like wildfire. Plus, I'm sure they're not exactly in good health, so that doesn't help the situation much either.

I'm gonna bump this thread because what I have seen today is atrocious.

An average steak of average quality: 13$.

A good cut of meat: 21$... Twenty one fucking dollars... I could not believe it. I ask the butcher WTF was going on and it's like that for every meat. I saw a 20 pack of boneless chicken thighs for 23$.  That's easily twice than what I paid for it last time I bought chicken thighs. It's price gauging at this point.

Fuck meat. Beans it is. 78 cents a can. Meat will price itself outside of mainstream consumption. It's soon gonna be a luxury item.

just like it used to be and should be if we followed our evolutionary diet. i personally would love to give up meat but i find it very hard to continue without lots of food preparation time.

good cuts of meat of quality is basically 20 per pound here, you can get it much less but the lack of quality is noticeable.

it is so crazy how much food we waste and how much we charge for it. we will just continue to bury our head in the sand and keep eating meat like additives.

The shitty dollar has a lot to do with it (thanks trudea) and also the cattle industry has had a couple bad years and there has been less supply.

If I want cheap meat I shop at the Asian markets.  My favorite is T&T grocery store.  Their produce is all like 50% less than other places and the quality is good too.  Many "western" grocery stores are unionized and they charge noticibky higher prices, that's also part of it.

As long as there's a market, there'll be cattle ranches. But in any case, it's just as well. It's not sustainable in the long run.

new york strips are on sale around here this week.  one place has them for 6.99/lb and another has them for 9.99/lb.  filet mignon is at the usual 22.99/lb at the store i usually go to.  there are a couple meat markets around here that are out in the middle of nowhere(practically) and their steaks are expensive.

here's a little tip, the smaller the grocery store the cheaper the food is, at least around here thats the way it is.  also gas stations are suprizingly cheap for some things as well.  Something about that great big lot and upkeep i think with the large grocery, but one would also think they would have access to better bulk prices as well.  You can buy local meat for the price of the large store price.  But the thing i hate about the local meat is the little bastereds only sell to u if u agree to use 'their' butcher shop who obviously gets a share in the profits which is the only reason i don't buy local.  If im buying a quarter of meat i want that leg thrown in the back of my pickup, ill drive that shit home and chop it up myself, not pay some goofball $100 to chop it up on his bacteria infested countertops or soaked in bleach and mixed in with the last 20 goofball orders
