Do you suffer from Depression? Watch this
    #21696506 - 05/18/15 10:32 PM (8 years, 8 months ago)

Really really helpful video IMO explaining what it's like to be depressed, and how it is miscategorized.

http://www.ted.com/talks/andrew_solomon_depression_the_secret_we_share?language=en#t-389866

what say you?

Even if you don't have depression, did you find the video enlightening on the topic?

I had already seen this before.

I was in the category of depression. But I have come a long way. I am at the point of being content with my situation in life. I do everything I can to remain content, and to enjoy/appreciate what I have instead of focusing on what I don't have. It is the only way to help what some people refer to as a the struggle. It works for me.

I had been depressed for years. Sometimes I think it is because of my own self pity, or apart of it was. But I have also recently, i guess several months ago, began training my mind consciously to face my overwhelming emotions on the past and my lifes issues- to stay in the present, and just focus on what I am doing, to stay in a mode of appreciation of life. and keeping feel good philosophies which I view as 'little tricks' to help me past a bad thought onto something else really fast. For example, If I think about my ex with another guy, I think, well every guy I know had a girl they loved and lost because of some bulshit, I am not alone, next thought.

I could easily fall back into a depression if I don't correct myself daily from bad thinking habits. So far, I have come along way

1. Getting over best friends death
2. Getting over GF of 3 years leaving me
3. Getting over my daily physical pain from injuries (turned it into background noise)
4.Getting over my parents rejecting me as their Son and cutting off all contact, (because I smoked weed sometimes and don't believe in god)

If these four things come up in my mind, I know instantly I need to change the thought to something, or doing something in which I can focus on. Doing this has decreased my stress and my mind being over active.

Thanks so much for your thoughtful post.

I'm glad you were willing to share your story of triumph, hope it continues!

I cried watching it, it hit home for me. Another video was about how people who fail suicide attempts are kinda scoffed at, but even tho 19/20 suicide attempts fail the first time, they're 37% mor likely to finish the second.

Being sad is healthy if it helps you change

Yeah its a sketchy subject. I remember in highschool females who would cut themselves would be marked as 'attention whores'. In the grand scheme of things, this is obviously extremely bad behavior and depreciation for ones body.

I think alot of them fail because they want it, and don't want it. For example, Some will cut themselves or try to overdose, but they will take the minimal amount of cutting, or pills to do the job. In actuality, if they were sure about the finality of causing their own death, they would just stab themselves in the heart/neck/stomach/ etc. or shoot themselves, jump off a building and what not. I think those would cause a quicker suicide that would skip out on someone saving them or them deciding to save their own life.

Still the second attempt is 37% percent more likely to be a fatal one.

They've had the practice, they know what to do.

I do see where you're coming from though. Many want it to be known but don't know if they want to die. Some want to die and figure taking a bunch of pills will kill them and don't do the research and just end up with organ trouble thereafter.

I don't feel most cutters fall into I want to kill myself category.

I personally know someone that used to cut them selves. When I asked them why, the answear was "to release the pain". I don't think this person was trying to kill themself. They are still alive btw and doing better than ever. They just wanted something to distract their thoughts, even if it was for a few seconds. Kinda like doing some dope, or drinking to escape the reality just for a bit.

Some do, I agree they're rare. I used to cut myself, stopped that a while ago. It's a rush to see the blood, feel the endorphins blah blah.

Someone I knew was really upset that his cousins *roommates* kept teasing him. He strugged with depression for a while. He said maybe I should fucking kill myself????

They said sure fuck it.

He took a knife and cut like INCHES deep into his arm. Tore up a bunch of nerves I believe he hit an artery, blood was sort of oozing/squirting out and he realized what he did. He dropped the knife and said someone has to take me to the hospital! He has some feeling in his arm now but I haven't talked to him but one time since.

And he was wearing a cast of sorts.

I think we all deal with our depressions in different ways.

Yeah that's fucked about your friend. The people that say that shit to bully people will get what's coming to them. Or, or at least when the grow up (I'm guessing we're talking about teenagers here) will come to their senses and at least aknowledge to themselves that what the did/said was some in humane shit.
