mycobag slow bulk colonization PICS
    #21695523 - 05/18/15 06:47 PM (8 years, 8 months ago)

This is my first time growing grains to bulk, and the bulk is colonizinh rather slowly.  Some info:  6 mycobags, ban hua thanon x4 and b+ x2.  I mixed colonized organic rye berries with bulk (horse manure, exotic zoo manure, organic coconut coir, vermiculite, and gypsum), in 1:2.5 ratio, over 2 weeks ago and put them on the shelves, covering shelves with a towel.

One noobie mistake i made was packing the mixture by setting the bags on the floor few times, as to increase the surface of the mix, which made the bulk packed.  Amother mistake was not allowing any ambient lighting.  It seems that they are slowly colonizing, but its been longer than expected.

Seems that they are getting some FAE. Through filter patches in the bags, and the moisture seems spot on, as i see tiny droplets forming on top of mycelium.  Looking at the pics, what would you fo in my position.  Should i break up the bulk to speed up the process or let it be?  Should i take down the towel and allow some ambient light?  After how long does the mycelium go bad, as in it wouldnt fruit at all?  Thanks in advance.

Its almost there, don't break it up. I have never spawned in bags like that but it looks like the sub might have been a little too wet in addition to be slightly compacted. I would give it a few more days to see if it thickens up and if it doesn't then just fruit it.

Also you should wait 24 hours before bumping your thread. Wouldn't want it to get locked before you got an answer. Patience is key in this hobby

Youre right, i tend to forget that..haha.  ill let em sit for few more days and see what happens.  Would introducing some minor ambient light make a difference at this point?

Should have had ambiant 12/12 light the whole time. . . probably not the reason its slow tho. My bet is too little GE from them bags and possibly too wet a substrate.

I have a casing already, and while i know its not necessary for cubes, i wanted to try it out with this grow.  If you introduce the light cycle to colonizing bulk, how do you prevent it from pinning before you can apply casing?

Light is not a primary pinning trigger. Light will not cause pinning.

Hahaha I used that same kit. I did mine without the casing and it took about 11 days to start pinning. Once it was colonized I just would fan it twice a day. I didn't mist because there was so much moisture in the bags. I actually ended up cutting the bags off and placing the loafs into a SGFC because I was getting way too many side pins near the bottom of the bag.

This is 2 days after cutting the bags off

Nice.  Did you get a decent yield?  Thanks for the info guys, ill update with some photos once i have something to show.  I may build a SGFC myself at some point.

I haven't harvested it yet. But it looks like it's going to be a decent yield. It's been exactly one month since I noc'd the kit. But the sgfc is most defiantly helping.

Nice.  I think im going to keep my in the bags, and case them in the next few days.  We can compare the yields.  what type of cube are you growing?
