Abstinence from, and the craving of psychedelics
    #21694006 - 05/18/15 10:42 AM (8 years, 8 months ago)

Hi all,

Let's talk about psychedelics and breaks from using them.

How do you experience breaks? Why do you take them? Why do you jump back in to using psychs? How do you feel different in periods of use as opposed to periods of abstinence?

I've had one period of relatively heavy psych use that was followed by a 4-5 year period of complete abstinence from any drugs.
I dived back in two years ago and since then I have gone a lot deeper and I tripped a lot more frequently than before.
Right now, I am in another abstinence period that has lasted 5 months so far.

I stopped for a while because I felt that psychs made me aware of psychological problems I needed to deal with. The psychs were not going to solve them, they were just going to expose them.

So now, I have been working on those for 5 months and I feel better.
The desire to trip has been lurking in the background for some time and it just keeps getting stronger.

I wonder what triggers it?

I am starting to feel like all drug use is a from of self-medication. Some may use for confidence, some for treating pain or trauma, some to relieve stress, and so forth.

If I am abstinent I guess I feel like I am not experiencing things as intensely as I'd like to. My feelings are relatively blocked and shielded and in my abstinence I can feel these walls reconstruct. Their reconstruction is like a growing itch to demolish them with a strong dose.

So, I guess I need to find a real life solution to this. Mindfulness maybe (I have already started to work with that).

I'm not exactly sure what I want to get out of this thread. I am just curious about the relationship other people have with their psychedelics and breaks they take from using them.

I get the same thing when I take a long break from psychedelics. I get the cravings, the need to trip again, like its calling me back.

I think there is a couple reasons why this happens, for me personally.

There is something addicting about psychedelics. I know "addiction" is a bad word around these parts, but hear me out.

Addicting in a "i want to take the journey again" type of way, like being addicted to traveling the world. Maybe "strong passion" is a better term. Once you see one cool place, you wanna see more, and more then more places!

Same with psychedelics. I think we all have that urge, that desire to "travel our mind", to explore new ways of experiencing life. And nothing really compares to taking psychedelics. It is unique in itself.

I also think maybe we all lack extreme excitement in our lives. Psychedelics are exciting, mysterious, intense, and interesting. Psychs give us that sense of awe and wonder that we all crave, similar to traveling the world.

And there are so many aspects to a psychedelic trip, visual effects, auditory effects, the mental thought-journey, introspection, euphoria, social bonding, and the unexplainable. All those aspects of the trip as appealing, no?

Lastly, I think its confidence. The confidence to take on a challenge, to push ourselves. Sometimes, that confidence to push our limits goes to far (like my friend AndyApex :nonono:), and we end up in a trainwreck situation. It has likely happened to all of us, pushing ourselves too far or in the wrong area. But even after horrific trips, we still wanna take that trip.

Why? Because we need it in our lives.

Good post. I remember reading Jansen's book on Ketamine. He mentioned novelty drive as a strong motivating factor for psychedelic and amphetamine use. Appearently novelty drive is a symptom of slightly lower dopamine levels than average. Novel situations spike dopamine levels slightly so that us novelty seekers feel better, more normal.

I guess it is true that I am currently unable to feed this novelty drive in the real world. New experiences generally require some expenses :mad2:

Good take on the matter

Yeah, Ive heard of this "novelty drive" in College.

It didnt have a name back then, but the premise was people who seek drug experiences have lower levels of dopamine (the feel-good drug in your brain) and seek these out in order to boast their dopamine levels.

This is where "thrill seekers" come into play. Roller coasters, BASE jumpers, skydivers. They all seek the thrill of intense experiences. And adrenalin is no boring drug. It is powerful, and it feels really GOOD.

In other words, we are all likely easily bored and need psychedelics to "entertain" us for lack of a better word.

Its weird to think a person could be naturally high by life itself. I only had such a mind when I was a kid, where EVERYTHING was fun, exciting and interesting.

I guess us psychedelic users are all thrill seekers  I know for a fact I love waterparks, cause of the thrill! :yesnod:

My breaks are pretty much the same as inbetween trips when tripping.  But I've tripped so many times it doesn't much matter to me whether I am or not.  During periods of use I feel better than when I'm not, but it can be so profound that usually when I'm not I'm just happy to not be, and when I am I'm happy to be, if that makes sense.  Gonna be tripping heavily within a month or two, and of course YMMV.

With mushrooms anyway breaks are easy - you just stop, for whatever reason.  And when you're ready to start again, you start, for whatever reason. If you over-analyze that you'll go nuts.  So IME there's not that much to it all.

Whether it's self medication or not, who cares?  That can just be another story you tell yourself to just basically have a good time screwing with your mind. In a perfectly healthy way, of course. :awesomenod:

I had a 3 1/2 month break from Mid- February till the end of May this year in 2015. Prior to starting with Ayahuasca I was suicidal, I felt I could not carry on anymore. Not one more straw could be added to the 10,000 straws which broke the camel's back.

Ayahuasca changed all that for me. No longer suicidal, I love life now. In fact since I've seen that there is more the the world than the mundane, and that the powers that be have made psychedelics illegal just to hide this away from all of us added fuel to the fire.

Taking psychedelics is an act of defiance to the repressive status quo. When I wasn't taking them, I thought about the experiences that I have had. Everyday I would think about them, they were that profound.

Hate to say the word 'addiction' as well. It's just there is nothing in day to day normal life that even remotely compares. It's my bland experience seeking novelty, more than anything else.

I really love using psychedelics  frequently because I enjoy them and the outlook they give me. I have been taking breaks to keep it special, somehow even though I have been a heavy psychedelics user for several years after a couple of months I feel like its one of my first trips all over again. And I definitely crave psychedelics. I may occasionally want some other type of drug but it's no more severe than craving some ice cream but I can't ressist the urge to trip

Hell, even if it's an addiction it's a healthy one, IME. :awesomenod:
